[EN] Worth trying in the UK / [RO] Merită încercat în UK (20)

[EN] It’s been almost five years since I stopped watching TV; I do it only accidentally, urged by someone.

[EN] Still, I sometimes happen to do it voluntarily when I am abroad, curious to know “what’s on TV” in a particular country.

[EN] It was not in the UK, but in Brussels – where I’ve been to 8 times – where I discovered EastEnders.

[EN] Not that I liked it and I’d be ‘crazy about it’… but I understood why this series (soap opera) is so popular.

[EN] I recommend watching a few episodes, in order to get a more or less comprehensive perspective upon British society today.

[EN] Most contemporary British realities, including politically correct clichés, are present there. [RO] Cele mai multe realităţi britanice contemporane, inclusiv clişee corecte politic, sunt prezente acolo.

[EN] One year ago I was in Rome – here are some (more or less bizzare) similarities between Italy and the UK.

[EN] I will illustrate here these Italian realities, linking to other pages of MunteanUK describing similar things discovered in Great Britain.

[EN] As I’ve already promised, I hope to make a relevant illustrated comparison, worthy of comments in spite of the ‘No comments’ title :-) [RO] Cum am promis deja, sper să fac o relevantă comparaţie ilustrată, demnă de comentarii, în ciuda titlului  ‘Fără comentarii’ :-)

[EN] I’ve already mentioned the sightseeing buses (+ here) that Bucharest lacks.

[EN] An Italian (actually… Nepalese) version of fish and chips (+ here). [RO] O versiune italienească (de fapt… nepaleză) de fish and chips (+ aici).

[EN] CCTV warnings (+ here) – although not so many in Italy…

[EN] Weird water sinks (+ here) – foot operated in Italy, far better than British ones.

[EN] National symbols still running – pictured here, a 40 years old Fiat 500.

[EN] Omnipresent street cleaning vehicles in Rome – however, UK streets were undountedly cleaner in the UK.

[EN] Keys opening doors with their teeth upwards may not be so typically British…

[EN] Equally beautiful and comfortable trains around Rome, alike those going to London.

[EN] Many, many photoholic Chinese tourists in both countries and capitals.

[EN] Homeless people and beggars, more in Rome than in all places I’ve been to in the UK combined – maybe not so many as in Brussels.

[EN] I’d surely choose whisky (Scottish, American, whatever…) over amaro – an awful Italian herbal liquer.

[EN] There are many beautiful parks in the UK, however, I guess that none matches the splendor of the completely natural Caffarella Park in Rome.

[EN] Instead of relying on excessive street signs, Italians do seem more willing to pay police officers to direct traffic.

[EN] Unlike in the UK, I saw no young native drunkards, though ‘drinking leftovers’ are equally visible in Rome – are immigrants or tourists to blame?!

[EN] Why are Italians less eager to take the bus? On a single street in Rome I saw 10 times more the total of scooters noticed in 3 months in the UK.

About public transport in the UK (19) [Despre transportul în comun în UK]

Almost anywhere you go in Britain (mainly in public institutions, yet not exclusively there), you are given a form to complete. Voluntarily – as far as I noticed.

So is the case in the bus station of Inverness, where next to a touch screen monitor with data about bus schedules throughout the Scottish Highlands, one can find such a questionaire.

“We would appreciate any comments or suggestions you could make to help us improve,” the Bus Station team (or manager?) tells you.

This looks like another ‘good Brit example’ – but do these people really take into account what is written there?! I wish some readers of mine could clarify my doubt!
