[EN] St. Andrew’s Cross / [RO] Crucea Sf. Andrei

[EN] Many happy returns of this day for Romania, Scotland, Georgia, Greece, Russia, Ukraine and even… Barbados – where St. Andrew is regarded as a spiritual patron! [RO] La mulţi ani pentru România, Scoţia, Georgia, Grecia, Rusia, Ucraina şi chiar... Barbados – unde Sf. Andrei este privit ca patron spiritual!

[EN] If only these nations would retain – in this Godless world – a bit of the faith of the humble fisherman who turned into a brave apostle of Christ!

[EN] The pic was taken over Bucharest (Sept 2012). The ‘arms’ are airplane condensation trails. But what if they mean more than science can explain?

Ciudăţenie de toamnă (3) – dezamăgirea [Autumn oddity (3) – the disappointment]

In winter, the English Channel can be drearily colourless.

Whether it’s looked at from England (pics 2, 4, 6, 8).

Or from the opposite direction – France (pics 1, 3, 5, 7).

That is from East Sussex or Brittany (La Bretagne).

The pics weren’t meant to be black & white or sepia.

This is how my Panasonic Lumix took them.

They are as colourless as a world without God.

As if we were Darwins species, born from a sea of nothingness.

The crippled giant [Gigantul infirm]

One shouldn’t have necessarily been a great military analyst to anticipate that such a moment would sooner (rather than later) come for the Perfidious Albion.

The commanders of the armed forces (depleted by budgetary cuts) seem to be shrugging their shoulders in front of David Cameron’s request to implement a no-fly zone over Syria.

Great Britain, the former superpower of the 19th and early 20th century, can’t do anything in Syria by itself, and mustering American and NATO support would take much time.

The only readily available ally would be Turkey, but imposing a Libyan scenario on Bashar al-Assad can certainly draw the ire of Russia.

Would Britain (and France?!) risk another Crimean War, when the odds of victory are so different from what they were some 160 years ago?

Assuming that the newly re-elected ‘pacifist’ at the White House agrees with Cameron’s eagerness to go to war, wouldn’t all risk turning into a Third World War?

If I were Argentina’s president these days, I’d be rubbing my hands, wishing very much to see Britain involved in Syria.

The military giant of 1982 is severely crippled, while Obama will most probably not do anything to defend the pride of the USA
’s former colonial power.

By the time (2016-2018) London gets a new aircraft carrier, it would be very unlikely for the next (Labour?!) government to promise retaking the Falkland Islands.

[EN] I admit that sinful I sometimes can’t help enjoying when I watch the sad view of some ‘punished smokers’. [RO] Admit că păcătosul de mine uneori nu mă pot abţine a mă bucura când urmăresc trista de privelişte a unor ‘fumători pedepsiţi’.

[EN] I remember the long hours when I breathed in the sickening smoke... at school, at work, on the street, in pubs, sometimes even on beaches or in parks.

[EN] Nevertheless, there’s nothing funny – neither I, nor anyone else should laugh at these enslaved people.

[EN] None of us would look better if our power of will were diminished by nicotine and the tyranny of hedonism.

[EN] This is how those once ‘cool’ smokers (like these teens drinkers) look when they grow up… pretty ‘un-cool’, I’d say… [RO] Aşa arată acei cândva ‘cool’ fumători (precum aceşti băutori adolescenţi) când cresc mari... destul de ‘ne-cool’ aş zice eu...

[EN] Sidelined: taken out of their daily routine, out of their work environment or even out of buildings.

[EN] Smoking is no longer a comfortable experience in most of EU countries and the USA. It still is in China and Russia.

[EN] Lighting a cigarette has become something that must always be done outside… And not only outside the European Commission headquarters in Brussels (pic 1).

[EN] Smokers are compelled to go out in front of little stores in Brighton (2) or to descend 30-40-50 floors in New York City.

[EN] And that may not be the worst. They could be crammed into glass cubes like in the Airport of Munich (3)…

[EN] Is it good? Is it bad? Is it discriminatory? Is it politically correct? What about the efficiency of these constraints? [RO] Este bine? Este rău? Este discriminatoriu? Este politic corect? Ce putem zice de eficienţa acestor constrângeri?

[EN] Maybe some good results will be observed over the decades, when other cause of death would seem insurmountable… [RO] Poate că unele rezultate bune vor fi observate peste decenii, când alte cauze ale morţii vor părea insurmontabile…
