[EN] Grave and unpleasant readings / [RO] Lecturi grave şi neplăcute (4)

[EN] These days, probably all of us get overwhelmed with stupid Christmas messages in our e-mail inboxes, plus mobile phones... all kinds of stereotypical ‘best wishes,’ which mean nothing for anyone.

[EN] What a waste (of time + money), out of which only mobile operators earn, as I’m sure that the Brits (who send 1.5 billion SMSes a week) are equally uninspired as Romanians, and they need ideas for Christmas messages!

[EN] What are words like... ‘happy’, ‘prosperity’, ‘goodness’, ‘light’, ‘joy’, ‘gifts’ or ‘blessing’... without any reference to The Nativity of Christ? Absolutely nothing! Absolut nimic!

[EN] I don’t want any blessing (?!) form this satanic spirit of Christmas, nor any gifts from this masonic myth of Santa Claus, therefore I thank everyone who spared me form any impersonal SMS or e-mail.

[EN] This message of mine is also collective, but a message sent to more people doesn’t mean it’s an uninspired or stereotypical one – therefore, I thank those who sent me anything from their heart, be it a quotation from a book!

[EN] If only at least one of the dozens of people I’m writing to will care to stop for a second their rush to nowhere (to having fun, to enjoying themselves, to eating well, to drinking much, to bulding themselves up some careers)...

[EN] ...to read about this dreadful mass slaughter, I guess these words would be a more useful gift for them than any impersonal wishes!

[EN] Not global warming, not the orchestrated economic crisis, not any of Bush’s wars (or Obama’s – for the fools who still believe that he won’t bomb any country!), not the lack of economic development, not corruption, nor the ‘Big Bang experiment’ chain us down to miserable lives, and threaten our future.

[EN] The end of the world will not come for anything else, if not for the hundreds of millions of unborn children who have been aborted for the past half a century!!!

[EN] There’s no greater crime, but the bigger it is, bigger still our indifference... won't the punishment match our inequities?

[EN]What’s wrong with the author of this blog?”…many will ask. He was a decent guy… A bit weird, of course, but not quite mad.

[EN] Well, I am not mad (anyway, my defence is irrelevant – what madman would say he is mad? :-), I’m just offering a strong warning that I believe in, instead of offering any tasteless Christmas wish.

[EN]Why should we care of these? Who do we harm with our protected sex? What’s wrong with having a little fun? If you (the stupid I) are unable to send us a normal Christmas message, why are you bothering us with this one? Why don’t you simply leave us alone?[RO]De ce să ne pese de acestea? Cui facem rău cu sexul nostru protejat? Ce-i rău în a ne distra puţin?

[EN] These could be some potential reactions to my Christmas message...

[EN] I have countless things to ask forgiveness for, from many people, but not for being who I am...

[EN] I won’t apologise to anyone for sending an unusual Christmas message, as long as opting to mark my message as ‘spam’ is as a free choice as the abortive pill!

British English vs American English: two quarrel(l)ing stepsisters [Engleza britanică vs engleza americană: două surori vitrege la harţă]

One doesn’t have to be George Bernard Shaw to acknowledge the fact that ‘England and America are two countries separated by a common language.

Having at least a little prior knowledge of English, and being blessed with the chance to visit both these countries (although one is a mid-size island, and the other a continent!) offers a good opportunity to spot the differences.

They are funny differences to me, or rather annoying to others (thanks to a fellow blogger for inspiring this post), however, quite important differences sometimes. If you can’t spell a word correctly or use an inappropriate term nobody will take your head off, but various communication breakdowns could occur.

As far as I experienced myself, I’d say that the most common (or commonest?!) consequences of mistakes in pronounciation are getting on the wrong bus, and ordering some food you didn’t want to… But I’m looking forward to anyone sharing even some worse experiences.

Making lists of different usages of words is beyond the purpose of this blog, but here’s a great site dealing with these linguistical stepsisters :-) What I would like to do here is just ask for my readers’ views about how English is spoken in the UK, in the USA, and in other parts of the world…

I’m only asking of few questions, followed by my own answers to them (an interview with myself – that’s pathetic, isn’t it?), and – God willing – maybe I’ll draw some interesting comments to this blog post.

1. Whose spoken English did you understand easier? The Brits’ or the Americans’?
- Americans of all walks of life speak inteligibly to me, while – irrespective of their regional accent – the Brits tend to speak more intelligibly, the higher their educational background is.

2. Which were the worst native speakers with whom you barely managed to communicate?
- Those in Glasgow were awful. Not only that I very often had to ask for a sentences to be repeated to me, but while I was sitting in the bus trying to eavesdrop on people’s conversations I was always asking myself ‘what language could it be?!’ – and it was no Gaelic or anything else, just English as spoken in Glasgow, also known as Glasgow Patter or Glaswegian.

3. Which of the two versions of English seems easier to learn?
- Obviously, the American one, which appeared to me as a relatively unitary language from California, to Iowa, Virginia and New York, while in the UK, from one county to another people could easily get the impression that they are listening to a different language.

4. Name an advantage (a plus) of the British language!
- The fact that, when pronounced correctly, there’s no chance for misunderstanding: ‘ear’ always sounds like ‘ear,’ not like ‘year,’ when you hear a Brit speak.

5. Name an advantage (a plus) of the American English!
- The fact that, no matter what their country of origin is, immigrants in New York learning American English end up speaking a more comprehensible language (at least to non-native speakers like I am) than immigrants in London. Given an Iraqi with no previous exposure to English, I tend to believe that you could understand him easier if he learned English in America, than if he did so in Britain.

*** NOTE: The British use two ‘l’-s in quarrelling, while the Americans only one, therefore writing quarreling

Chestii d-astea, numai la britanici (18) [Things like these, only at the Brits]

God’s place in a humanist society (2) [Locul lui Dumnezeu într-o societate umanistă]

I wish I go to church, but my mum doesn’t take me. I was told it’s very beautiful inside…,” I heard a little girl (four or five years of age) saying when the bus we were in passed by this St Peter’s Church in Brighton (all the churches in this city – here).

She was talking to a teenager, probably some kind of baby-sitter or cousin (I just felt that she was her sister) who promised to her “I will take you some day.

Can we go now?,” she insisted. Of course, the anwer was negative :-( But – hopefully – maybe her dream was eventually fulfilled one day. Only God knows how many children throughout the UK are just curious to enter a place of worship, just to see ‘what is it all about’…

I’m as curious as this little girl about how many of British children ever get the chance to hear about the Lord (anything else than the antichristic flood of ‘secret Gospels’ in contemporary books and movies), and how many of them ever entered a church for ‘worship’, apart from going there to various ‘cultural events’.

Many people in this country complain about the awful teenagers of today, but do these people realize that the poor children – no mater how self-destructively they would behave – simply carry the burden of their parents’ sins?

All these respectable Brits (?!), ‘who never hurt a fly,’ and consider themselves law-abiding citizens don’t realize that their children don’t know what else to do with this ‘earthly paradise’ which their parents build for them than to destroy it.

This British (but not specific to the UK only!) paradise of the secular consumer is but an antechamber of hell. Most of today’s ‘wicked British teens’ had respectable parents who – like the parents of this little girl whom I heard in a bus – never offered to them another meaning of life than ‘having fun,’ which seems to be some sort of supreme humanist value in this country, as well as throughout the whole ‘civilised world.

What other thing should these children know apart from the fact that a church is a great place where to throw a party, as long as even the so-called ‘Anglican Bishops’ seem very fond of partying?

And while Catholics eventually remember to baptise their children (not for the sake of saving their souls, but because otherwise they couldn’t attend a Catholic school), the Anglicans don’t even have this ‘incentive.’

Obviously, as an Orthodox Christian, I seriously doubt the validity of all these heretical baptisms, but this is not the issue here. I just witness another sad fact in the UK – baptisms of children are on the wane.

While only roughly only two thirds of children are baptized, among the Catholics in the UK (some data about this – here), the figures are even more dreadful among the Protestants – places where 40% of children take the baptism are considered ‘very religious’ ones.

Fewer than one in six children of Anglican parents are baptised in the UK these days… Taking this into account, I dare asking those who put the blame on the ‘youth mobs’, as if they appeared out of nowhere: why do you wonder how godlessly teenagers behave in this country?

Femeile în UK (11) [Women in the UK]
