SUVs don’t guarantee happiness, do they? [SUV-urile nu garantează fericirea, nu-i aşa?]

What I’m about to say surely isn’t noticeable exclusively in poor countries like Romania and Bulgaria or in Africa.

On the contrary, I assume that in most other parts of the world (could Denmark be an exception?), driving a SUV is the sign of an enviable social status.

The bigger the car is, the clearer the mark of prosperity, of a successful and carefree life – this is how most of us see these car owners, don’t we?

It’s silly to have any prejudice either against such vehicles or their drivers. Nevertheless, I can’t help wondering…

Why are so many of these motorists (including women) apparently unhappy, displeased with the world around and therefore driving aggressively?

Why do they very often seem unhappy about the speed of car queues, about the weather or about fellow traffic participants driving not-so-fancy cars?

I bet that they often happen to be unhappy even about the phone conversations that they have while behind the wheel.

It may be politically incorrect (sexist) to presume it, but here I say it: is because they are talking to the lewd fat guy who bought them their SUV? :-)

UK’s motor vanity fair (26) [Bâlciul deşertăciunilor cu motor din UK]

Again, I find no point in saying much; here’s another extremely interesting spyder photographed by my reader C.L., which was parked to the left side of this one.

To my great surprise, quite soon after I had posted the previous episode of this series, someone correctly identified the car brand. Would this happen again?

I couldn’t identify the symbol on the – let’s thank Wikipedia for the short English lesson! :-) – bonnet ornament (or radiator cap or motor mascot or car mascot) in the pic.

UK’s motor vanity fair (25) [Bâlciul deşertăciunilor cu motor din UK]

A strange looking car photographed by my reader C.L., I-don’t-know-where in the UK, inside what seemed to be (from other pictures) a sort of exclusive little scrapyard, as it is known in British English.

Or, if any one is more familiarised with the name in American English – a junkyard. A place where a bunch of former fancy cars – spyders (or roadsters by their American name) – had been put to rest (or to rust :-).

This carmine (do I correctly identify the colour, girls?!) car appears to me as one that has once been some mighty ‘king of the roads’, maybe in the 1960s or 1970s. But I’ve got no idea about the brand.

To any reader from anywhere in the world ever landing on this blog page (and being better informed about this car that I am, of course) I can only say: please, share your knowledge with us!

Cod portocaliu [Code Orange]

De-a lungul ultimilor ani, de fiecare dacă când România a înfruntat condiţii meteorologice extreme, fusesem avertizaţi. Primisem semnalul că urmează ceva foarte rău (caniculă, furtună, inundaţie, ger etc.) – cod portocaliu.

La fel precum alte respectabile ţări UE, şi noi avem sisteme de avertizare timpurie,  iar autorităţile statului pot să anticipeze întâmplările nedorite, pentru că ştiu când, unde şi cu ce amploare vremea o va lua razna.

Însă, fără excepţie, de fiecare dată suntem luaţi prin surprindere, de la vlădică la opincă, de la premierul-lopătar până la unii şoferi care s-or crede mai tari decât orice avertizări.

Am putea să ne amăgim că şi la alţii merg lucrurile la fel de prost când dă viscolul şi gerul (Big Freeze), invocând ultimele trei ierni aspre (poate vine şi a patra?!) din Anglia şi Scoţia. Cam tot aşa de mare este surpriza autorităţilor şi pe acolo...

Totuşi, clima Marii Britanii – şi aceasta de acum, darămite cea mediteraneană pe care i-o prevăd ideologii încălzirii globale – este destul de blândă, ca să justifice precauţii excesive.

Mai ales în condiţii de datorie publică consistentă, în UK nu prea se face să investeşti masiv în tehnologii anti-zăpadă. Las’ pe oamenii cu răspundere din Canada, Rusia ori Suedia să-şi bată capul cu aşa ceva...

Ei bine, poate că în UK o ‘merge şi aşa’ (tipic româneşte să-i zicem?), dar acolo ar fi avut loc măcar un mic cutremur politic de s-ar întâmpla, precum în România, ca viscolul să lase în urmă oameni morţi de frig în maşini.

Desigur, viaţa şi moartea sunt în mâna lui Dumnezeu, dar cine s-ar putea ascunde după scuza că “aşa a fost să fie”, când este vorba de un (prevăzut!) viscol?

Fiecare dintre noi vine şi se duce de pe lumea aceasta cum îi este rânduit, dar dacă adevărata cauză a morţii este ‘ciuma portocalie’, nicidecum gerul?

La opt ani de la îmbătarea cu promisiunile de stârpire ale ‘revoluţiei portocalii’, dezăpezirea unui kilometru de drum în România este de patru ori mai scumpă decât dezăpezirea unui kilometru de drum din Finlanda.

UK’s motor vanity fair (23) [Bâlciul deşertăciunilor cu motor din UK]

Apart from a brief trip to Berlin (some pictures of it on this blog), I didn’t have the chance to know how German cars ‘fit’ into the landscape of German cities.

However, I must say that they surely fit on the streets of an elegant British city like Edinburgh – where I saw hundreds of them and I wish I knew why most were either black or grey?! :-)

While even an iconic brand like the Mini is produced under German management (+ technical leadership, I presume), there’s no doubt that Brits love German cars.

Just like Americans who – irrespective of their patriotism requiring them to give a helping hand to their national car manufactures – keep buying German and Japanese brands.

The same ‘love story’ between motorists and German cars can be witnessed in Eastern Europe, although, with some typically ‘Oriental’ features.

In several countries neighbouring the EU, these cars are stolen from richer countries like some men used to kidnap their wives some no longer than a century or so ago.

Then, most of these cars are second hand vehicles, nevertheless, sometimes considered better than brand new cars like Dacia.

And there’s one more peculiarity of these cars – they are quite often driven by a particularly kind of people, the ‘manelists’, devout listeners of ‘manele’.

UK’s motor vanity fair (22) [Bâlciul deşertăciunilor cu motor din UK]

It goes well with exclusive golf courses, with luxurious mansions, with holding stocks or a top management position in the banking industry, with nobiliary titles and generally with a “I-am-not-an-ordinary-mortal” attitude.

It’s… Aston Martin, the oldest sports car maker (1914). Another iconic brand of the UK, produced in Gaydon, Warwickshire (West Midlands, England).

Only 5,000 such vehicles were sold in the world in 2010 (down from a peak of 7,300 cars in 2007) yet, despite problems of other British car manufacturers and the entire global automotive industry, the company is thriving.

As the economic crisis makes billions of people poorer, the few prospective buyers get richer, so that Aston Martin expects that 25% of its sales will come from Asia by 2016.

UK’s motor vanity fair (19) [Bâlciul deşertăciunilor cu motor din UK]

I guess it was in Brussels (in March 2008), when the idea of this blog series popped into my mind.

And it’s very likely that it was while taking the above picture of the above Mini – the Brit car that received a lot of good publicity (here or here) on this site…

…while I haven’t got any penny for that :-( Maybe it’s never too late for anything, and I could keep dreaming on :-)

And it was still in Brussels where I recently caught a glimpse of a 4-door Mini (other descriptions: here, here and here), the latest innovation of the German-British automaker.

Would this so-called ‘mini-SUV’ ever prove to at least remotely popular as the older Minis?

…or is it more likely to remain an oddity? Given the current dreadful state of the automotive industry, could anyone afford to make it a mere experiment?

[EN] Using pics from C.L., a reader of this blog, I am posting other ‘evidence’ about how good roads are in the UK.

Chestii d-astea, numai la britanici (25) [Things like these, only at the Brits]

Acest “Atenţie! Trec răţuşte!” este, probabil, unul dintre cele mai simpatice semne de circulaţie din lume. Şi unde altundeva decât în UK ne-am aştepta să-l întâlnim?

Poate or mai fi şi în alte locuri, dar acesta provine de undeva pe drumul dintre Fort William (despre care oi scrie cândva) şi Isle of Skye (un soi de dream destination enumerată aici).

Nici de data, imaginea nu a fost surpinsă de mine, ci de către cititoarea acestui blog C.L., care a devenit, practic, o colaboratoare :-)

Din câte se vede, tot cu o admiratoare a Scoţiei avem de-a face… Aşa se întâmplă că pe cei care se aseamănă, îi adună Dumnezeu, fie şi numai online.
