[EN] But it would be silly to think that the Brits are a ‘superclean nation’. As I said before (here or here), public cleaning in the UK fares better than that of Romania. Yet the people are not very much better at keeping clean. [RO] Dar ar fi o prostie să se creadă că britanicii sunt o ‘naţiune supercurată’. După cum am spus (aici sau aici), curăţenia publică în UK este mult mai bună decât în România. Dar oamenii nu sunt cu foarte mult mai buni la a păstra curăţenia.

[EN] Therefore, it’s categorically not worth risking one’s health by sitting on a toilet seat on a train British train! [RO] Aşadar, categoric nu merită să-ţi rişti sănătatea aşezându-te pe un colac de toaletă dintr-un tren britanic!

[EN] Not that it wouldn’t be equally risky (or at least unpleasant) anywhere in the world… Is it better in Singapore, Japan (foreigners face other risks there! :-)… or where? [EN] Among the things that are really not worth doing in the UK (are they worth doing anywhere else?!) I would also count buying snacks from trains, be them commuter trains or the famous Eurostar. [RO] Între lucurile care chiar nu merită făcute în UK (oare merită făcute oriunde altundeva?!) aş enumera cumpărarea de gustări din trenuri, fie ele de navetişti sau celebrul Eurostar.

[EN] A few reasons for my anti-recommandation are: 1) the rage of products at one’ choice didn’t seem very diversified; 2) portions (packages) were rather small; and 3) like in Romania, there’s no guarantee everything on the list is available. [RO] Câteva motive pentru anti-recomandarea mea sunt: 1) gama dintre care să alegi produsele nu părea foarte diversificată; 2) porţiile (ambalajele) erau mai degrabă mici; şi 3) la fel ca în România, nu există nici că tot ce apare pe listă este disponibil.

[EN] My recent journey (back home :-) to the UK convinced me it is high time I warned my readers of another sad (albeit rather trivial) aspect to have in mind... [EN] To those considering soups as an adequate fasting food, I have a little warning: soups served in restaurants are often 'improved' with milk or/and egg derivatives... [RO] Pentru cei care se gândesc la supe ca la o mâncare de post adecvată, am un mic avertisment: supele servite la restaurante sunt adesea 'îmbunăţăţite' cu derivate din lapte şi/sau ouă...

[EN] ... however, in fast food outlets one can find entirely vegetarian courses. But it's not worth offering details on how tasty they are, is it? About public transport in the UK (5) [Despre transportul în comun în UK]

For anyone who might have thought that I was just writing crap in the first episode of this series, here’s a photographed hint about how dangerous it could be not to listen to the advice given on the walls of mosts buses in the UK.

At least in this little aspect, I can only completely agree with Big Brother when he says: For your safety, please do not stand on the upper deck or stairs.

Honestly, it’s not worth not taking my advice and trying to keep one’s balance without using one’s hands.

And beware: sometimes one hand simply won’t be enough not to fall like a fool, especially when the bus turns or stops suddenly!

These stairs are too steep, too narrow and too bent to imagine one could comfortably ride the bus while standing relaxed (?!) on them.

When you hold heavy shopping bags, have a loaded backpack, while paying more attention to your photocamera (as any photoholic :-) than to anything else – that’s a sure recipe for disaster :-(

[EN] Not worth trying in the UK / [RO] Nu merită încercat în UK (6)

[EN] Not that vegetables are not good almost anywhere in the world, but it’s definitely not worth wasting one’s money for I served in this plate, somewhere around the Trafalgar Square. [RO] Nu că legumele nu sunt bune oriunde în lume, dar categoric nu merită să-ţi iroseşti banii pentru ce am servit eu în această farfurie, undeva în jurul Trafalgar Square.

[EN] Let me not be misinterpreted: those leaves of all sorts, the little tomatoes and olives tasted alright, but the price was shameless. [RO] Să nu fiu interpretat greşit: frunzele acelea de toate soiurile, roşioarele şi măslinele erau în regulă, dar preţul era neruşinat.

[EN] For this plate (not excessively full), for an elderberry drink, and a (too) little bread, I paid £ 8. [RO] Pentru această farfurie (nu excesiv de plină), pentru o băutură de soc şi o (prea mică) pâinică, am plătit £ 8.

[EN] It would be pointless to speculate on what one could have for lunch in Bucharest for the same price (that is 35,5 lei – according to the currency rate of today, August 27th). [RO] Ar fi inutil să speculez asupra a ceea ce ar putea cineva să-ţi ia la prânz în Bucureşti pentru acelaşi preţ (adică 35,5 lei – potrivit ratei de schimb de azi, 27 august).

[EN] My point is that I can assure anyone that a portion of Fish and Chips was cheaper (£ 5-7). [RO] Ce vreau să spun este că pot asigura pe oricine că o porţie de Fish and Chips era mai ieftină (£ 5-7).

[EN] Moreover, one could get even a worse deal: it’s not worth trying a vegetarian sandwich from Starbucks or on a Eurostar cruise – not much too eat for around £ 5, and also not very tasty :-( [RO] Mai mult, poţi face o afacere chiar şi mai proastă: nu merită să încerci un sandviş vegetarian de la Starbucks sau într-o călătorie cu Eurostarul – nu-i prea mult de mâncat pentru vreo £ 5 şi nici foarte gustos :-(

[EN] In these circumstances, some Brits complain about having do many fat people among them, and Big Brother tries to convince people of how healthy and tasty fruits and vegetables are! [RO] În aceste condiţii, unii britanici se plâng despre faptul că au prea mulţi oameni graşi între ei, iar Big Brother încearcă să convingă oamenii cât de sănătoase şi gustoase sunt fructele şi legumele.

[EN] Well, what about the fact that meat based dishes are generally cheaper than the healthy stuff? [RO] Ei bine, cu faptul că mâncărurile bazate pe carne sunt în general mai ieftine decât chestiile sănătoase cum rămâne?!

[EN] Not worth trying in the UK / [RO] Nu merită încercat în UK (5)

[EN] Not only in the UK (where I put this on my tongue) , but I find the above delicatessen (?!) not worth trying anywhere in the world. As far as I was told, it isn’t even a British speciality (originally, it’ probably a French fault :-), and not even awfully tasting. [RO] Nu numai în UK (unde am pus asta pe limbă), dar găsesc delicatesa (?!) de mai sus a nu merita încercată nicăieri în lume. Din câte mi s-a spus, nu este nici măcar o specialitate britanică (la origine, este probabil vina francezilor :-) şi nici măcar nu are un gust groaznic.

[EN] It tastes both as onion, and something sweet (red onion has its share of sweetness, doesn’t it?) – however, it just doesn’t seem to fit in the food preferences of someone from Romania, where we simly don’t have onion for desert… uh… nor marmalade as appetizer. [RO] Are gust deopotrivă de ceapă şi ceva dulce (ceapa roşie are partea ei de dulceaţă, nu-i aşa?) – totuşi, nu pare să se potrivească preferinţelor culinare ale cuiva din România, unde pur şi simplu nu mâncăm ceapă la desert... câh... nici marmeladă ca aperitiv.

[EN] What amazed me is that this speciality could be found in a rather regular canteen, from the point of view of the menu, and also weird :-) from other perspectives – the Café in the Crypt that I wrote about here. [RO] Ceea ce m-a uimit pe mine a fost că această specialitate se poate găsi într-o cantină mai degrabă obişnuită, din punctul de vedere al meniului, dar şi ciudată :-) din alte perspective – Café in the Crypt despre care am scris aici.

[EN] The lady at the counter even allowed me just to taste a bit, although I warned her that I probably won’t buy a gram of this marmelade. [RO] Doamna de la tejghea m-a lăsat chiar să gust un pic, deşi o avertizasem că probabil nu voi cumpăra niciun gram din această marmeladă.

[EN] As I said, it wasn’t completely distasteful – it’s just something that fussy I (?!) couldn’t eat, therefore I wouldn’t recommend anyone else trying it – but well, the world is full of reckless people who shouldn’t feel somehow bound by my piece of advice… [RO] Cum am spus, n-a fost complet dezgustătoare – doar ceva ce mofturosul de mine (?!) n-am putut să mănânc, astfel că nu recomand nimănui – dar, mă rog, lumea este plină de oameni nesăbuiţi, care n-ar trebui să se simtă cumva legaţi de sfatul meu...

[EN] I don’t know anything about how Orange works in the UK, as for using your Vodafone subscription in the UK, don’t bother to ask anyone. I did, in at least a couple of their stores, plus inquiring Romanians living in the UK. [RO] Nu ştiu nimic despre cum merge Orange în UK, cât despre folosirea abonamentului Vodafone Ro în UK, nu vă obosiţi să întrebaţi pe nimeni. Am făcut-o eu, în cel puţin două magazine de-ale lor, plus iscodind români din UK.

[EN] Not only that the prices for calling Eastern Europe are no match for those offered by O2, yet if your mobile terminal is blocked within the Vodafone Ro network, don’t expect: 1) that it will also work in the Vodafone UK network, nor 2) that you’ll find a Vodafone store that could offer the unblocking service – not even for a fee! [RO] Nu numai că preţurile pentru sunatul în Europa de Est nu se compară cu cele oferite de O2, însă dacă aparatul îţi este blocat în reţeaua Vodafone Ro, nu te aştepta: 1) că va funcţiona de asemenea în reţeaua Vodafone UK, nici 2) că vei găsi un magazin Vodafone care să ofere serviciul de deblocare – nici măcar contracost!

[EN] In various little Arab, Pakistani, Indian etc stores you could have your mobile unblocked, for prices around £ 14-15. But’s not worth the fuss (some said they needed at least 3, and even 12 – ?! – hours for my model of Nokia 6234!) – I made up my mind. [RO] În diferite prăvălioare arabe, pakistaneze, indiene ai putea să-ţi deblochezi telefonul, pentru preţuri în jurul a £ 14-15. Dar nu merită osteneala (unii ziceau că au nevoie de 3, ba chiar 12 – ?! – ore pentru modelul meu de Nokia 6234!) – m-am decis eu.

[EN] So, I bought myself a rather primitive (but brand new) Nokia 1110i, for £ 30. A Chevening Fellow smarter than me got a similar phone, plus a SIM card, for only £ 25! [RO] Astfel, mi-am cumpărat un model mai degrabă primitiv (dar nou-nouţ) de Nokia 110i, pentru £ 30. Un Chevening Fellow mai isteţ decât mine şi-a luat un telefon similar, plus un SIM card, pentru numai £ 25!
