[EN] Worth trying in the UK / [RO] Merită încercat în UK (8)

[EN] If I were to recommend at least some soft drinks that I liked in the UK, here are two such recommendations.

[EN] Firstly, any natural fruit juice from the picture above is absolutely delicious. It’s not among the cheapest available, but it was somehow ‘my official drink’ during the many hours of blogging when I stayed in the UK.

[EN] Secondly, for those who are fans of elderberry flower sodas, and – probably – imagined (like I did) that they are specific only to Romania, better review your opinion!

[EN] Obviously, the Brit version doesn’t taste as naturally as the elderberry soda which my mother is preparing, however, it is pretty good.

Witty bits from what I learned in the UK (9) [Vorbe de duh din ce am învăţat în UK]

A Scottish friend of mine correctly notes that today’s atheist Great Britain is living according to a bunch of unwritten (yet widely and often unquestionably accepted) ‘articles of faith’ – probably all of them being worth a separate blog post from my part. I will just stick to one of them now – my friend’s sixth, which states that “We have a two party democracy” – and try to expain how I remained with a very different idea from my stay in the UK.

Q: There’s hardly any doubt that, at least until recently, Britain has been governed by a very efficient political machinery (and I mean efficient from the point of view of politicians, not the one of citizens; see a summary of the latest scandal here :-)... But is the UK really a two party democracy?

A: “No, it’s an elected dictatorship,” I was once offered an answer by a professor who, instead of brainwashing us, the (possibly naive) Chevening Fellows, always seemed to express his views sincerely.
.
No matter what ‘democratic guarantees’ may be in place, the truth is that, during a certain legislature, the party which forms the government in the UK is in almost ‘complete control’ of the country.

The Prime Minister (PM) not only controls his cabinet, but also the ruling party, whose members are often puppets in his hands. Every now and then, a few mavericks may appear, nevertheless, the rule of the PM is rarely challenged.

Removing Margaret Thatcher or Tony Blair was no easy task, as neither getting rid of Gordon Brown appears to be these days. He seemes doomed to face an electoral disaster next year, but I don’t know whether he’d be replaced as head of Labour.

Theoretically, there are some institutions meant to offer ‘checks and balances’ in the Wesminster parliamentary system. Practically, nothing can be done to sack an unpopular government until the next elections. See here, and here two critical views on the Westminster system.

He may not be as strong as the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth was 350 years ago, nevertheless, today’s PM of the UK is a little dictator. This allowed Thatcher to proceed to massive privatisations, Blair – to go to war in Iraq, and Brown – to ‘save the world’ by throwing billions of pounds to the banks whose recklessness took them on the brink of bankruptcy.

It’s really not worth trying to compare the British and American systems of government, because of countless historical, ethnical, demographical, political, economic etc differences.
.
Or, if I were to name only one essential difference which makes the two hardly comparable is the fact that the USA is a federation... which functions incomparably better than many unitary states.

I’d dare to say that the American President can be more effectively ‘checked’ by the Congress (especially by the 50 states represented in the Senate) or the Supreme Court than the British PM can be ‘controlled’ by anyone in the UK. The only thing that voters can do every five years is to choose another dictator :-(

[EN] Not worth trying in the UK / [RO] Nu merită încercat în UK (8)

[EN] Among the things that are really not worth doing in the UK (are they worth doing anywhere else?!) I would also count buying snacks from trains, be them commuter trains or the famous Eurostar.

[EN] A few reasons for my anti-recommandation are: 1) the rage of products at one’ choice didn’t seem very diversified; 2) portions (packages) were rather small; and 3) like in Romania, there’s no guarantee everything on the list is available.

[EN] And if hunger could leave aside any considerations about the tastless stuff on sale, the lists of prices should be enough to discourage from buying :-( [RO] Iar dacă foamea ar lăsa deoparte orice consideraţii despre chestii fără gust la vânzare, listele de preţuri ar trebui să fie suficiente pentru a descuraja de la cumpărat :-(

Urme româneşti pe cuprinsul UK (3) [Romanian traces throughout the UK]

About public transport in the UK (7) [Despre transportul în comun în UK]

I don’t know if I’ve grown tired of keeping this blog – in spite of having little stories to tell + photos for at least 100 other posts :-) – or whether my thirst for vainglory is upset with having so few readers (one notable exception though!), but I think my words are not as important as sharing pictures from the UK.

Moreover, little photostories were the main purpose of the current series, as I am not particularly fond of techical aspects of motor vehicles. I just want to share some images you can’t regularily find on British city streets anymore, since these ‘classical’ double-decker buses are no longer being produced.

It’s too bad that even most city sight seeing buses are more modern versions :-(, nevertheless, in London tourists can still travel with such a bus on London Route 9 and London Route 15 – two ‘heritage routes’.

The original double decker (AEC Routemaster) remains a symbol of London, after decades of service (1956-2005). Beyond looking good – like steam locomotives looked good, didn’t they? – of course that there are various aspects worth considering whether these buses were really among the best solutions for public transport in the world or not.

Anyone interested in an extensive history of these buses – click here. For more (and better than mine!) pictures of these lovely Routemasters – click here, while for seeing dozens of models of double-deckers derived from the original AEC Routemaster – click here or click here.

For diecast metal or plastic scale models (hopefully some of them not ‘made in China’ but in the UK), for magnets, postcards etc – I recommend patiently investigating through souvenir shops in London. At first glance, a tourist could feel overwhelmed with the ‘same things’, but nice surprises (higher quality little toys) are alwyas possible.

The good news that never grows old [Vestea bună care nu îmbătrâneşte niciodată]

Christ is risen!, I am gladly saying to all those who are reading my posts written in English, assuming that most of you are Orthodox brothers in England and Scotland, who browse through my blog accidentaly or constantly, with genuine interest or only when disturbed by an annoying promotional e-mails (I’m sorry for being unable to send personal messages to anyone I’d like to) from my part.

When I entered the office yesterday, my greeting was answered with a typical atheist joke: “How do you know? Did you check from two sources?”. Moreover, ever since the wonderful night of Pascha, I have encountered many Romanians (part of a so-called Orthodox nation :-( utterly indifferent to this truth, that is to Him – the Truth.

Heart-breakingly indifferent I’d say… It really hurts to witness how far apart from the Light we have grown as a nation, and how irreversible this process seems to be. It may be sure that, for the time being, secularism, moral relativity, and the devastating effects of a fanatical atheist outlook on life are not as strong as in the UK. However, consumerism, materialism, and promiscuity are growing at least as fast as in Britain.

Sometimes I’m realizing that Orthodoxy is becoming a sect (like during the Holy Apostles times) in Romania, and I’m feeling (without having any strong evidence***) that this is the case also in Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Ukraine… everywhere, in fact. I’m afraid that not even Greece is an exception.

The percentage of Orthodox people taking part in the Divine Liturgy regulary is less than 10% in any of these once-called Orthodox nations, dropping to around 4% in Romania or 2% in Russia.

I am sorry to say this – and I wish my readers would disagree with me, and try to convince me of the opposite!!! – but I tend to believe that there are no Orthodox nations anymore. It’s just the universal New Israel (the worldwide Orthodox nation, the One Church that will never perish), but I’m not seeing any Orthodox (ethnical) nation left intact in our age of Apostasy.

It’s not worth looking at statistics which hierarchs or civil authorities may boast with, about millions of Orthodox believers! After all, when did numbers as such had any value for the Lord? Only our atheist contemporaries – and especially the Brits; click here to see how many famous British scientists are or were atheists :-( – is obsessed with figures, scores, charts, statistics; the Lord doesn’t need all these, because He knows each of our hearts!

The sad truth is that true believers (and I don’t want to claim that a true believer is necessarily less of a sinner, let’s not confuse the terms!) are rarer and rarer… And one doesn’t need statistics as evidence for that; it’s enough to look around in the world, and see how cold people’s hearts have become, how many fellow human beings are suffering, and the whole Creation (the ‘environment’, the forests, the seas, the animals etc) along with them!

I admit that I may be writing under the influence of being a little exhausted with witnessing so many religiously indiferent people around (some easier to love, as they are ‘nice people’; others harder to bear), and that’s why I may sound so pesimistic. However, what part of the sad reality around can take aware from me the joy of being aware of Christ’s Resurrection?

Indeed, I miss Scotland where I could hang around only with people whom I wanted to spend my time with, those sharing the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ! However – in order to express my joy, and praise the Lord –, I am dedicating to my fellow Orthodox brothers, as well as to all people who may browse though my blog, the following text.

It’s surely the most extensive quotation I’ve been posting on my blog so far, and I really hope everyone will feel it was worth reading it:

“It is striking that the disciples did not recognize Christ when He was next to them. Their physical eyes did not help them to see the risen God. But with the inner eyes of their soul they recognized Him. As soon as they knew this, He became invisible to them, for physical sight is not necessary when the heart is alive with faith.

That is what happened and happens to Christians when they come to believe in God. They have not seen Him, but their hearts are aflame with love for Him. Christ spoke about such people when He said: ‘Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe’ (Jn. 20:29). They are blessed, for they did not seek logical proofs, but the fire which God places in people’s hearts.

We believe in the resurrection of Christ not because somebody convinced us of it, but because we ourselves have come to know the Risen Christ through our inner experience. We have come to believe not because we saw God, but because we have felt His real presence in our hearts.

The skeptical mind of contemporary man says: ‘Unless I see I will not believe’. But we say: ‘I believe even though I do not see’. If everything in religion were visible, tangible and provable, why and in what would we need to believe? If there were not any mysteries in religion, how would it be different from everything else in our earthly life?

When we begin our lives as Christians, we challenge the world around us which demands from us a logical justification of our faith. Moreover, we challenge our own reasoning, which often doubts the existence of God. Setting sail on the ship of Christian faith, we put much at risk.
”

*** NOTE: I don’t know how relevant they are, but I found two links with statistics about worldwide church attendance, which I assume are using the same statistical research: here and here.

Biserica cu două altare din Londra [The church with two altars from London]

Chestii d-astea, numai la britanici (19) [Things like these, only at the Brits]
