[EN] Another fascinating spot of Scotland where I would have liked to get to is the
Isle of Iona, the little island from where
Sf. Columba spread Christianity to the Northern parts of Great Britain, in the latter half of the 500s.
[EN] Thanks to these photos offered by a sister in Christ –
Natalia Chechina, a
PhD student dealing with some very difficult sciences (for me at least :-) in Scotland – all my readers can take a virtual trip to this island.
[EN] As well as in the autumn of 2009, and the spring of 2010, Orthodox believers from all over the UK are due to gather on the island at the end of this month, to spend a ‘
week of tranquility’.
[EN] Iona lies 1.6 km from the
Isle of Mull, the 4th largest island near Great Britain. Almost barren, the island has only some 120 permanent residents, yet it keeps attracting pilgrims, as it is on of the
cradles of
Scottish Christianity (there’s also
another).
[RO] Iona se află la 1.6 km de
Isle of Mull, a 4-a cea mai mare insulă lângă Marea Britanie.
altul).
[EN] For the purpose of reviving interest in Iona and
its abbey, an
ecumenical community was established in 1938 by a
Church of Scotland minister. I don’t know anything about it; I just hope it’s nothing like the
Taizé community’s “
spring of ecumenism” supported by the Vatican.
Church of Scotland.
primăvara ecumenismului” a
comunităţii Taizé, susţinute de Vatican.
[EN] This blog
makes no secret of the fact that I believe in
One Church, and I don’t support ideas of ‘
reconcilation’ between several ‘
churches’. As long as there is only One Truth, not several ‘
bits of truths’, it’s a matter of accepting it.
[RO] Acest blog
[EN] However, Orthodox Christians shouldn’t live reclusively, cutting ties to other Christians, and pointing accusing fingers at them. They are not ‘
guilty’ for having been born within a heretical tradition, nor are we ‘
virtuous’ just because the Orthodox Church dogma is flawless.
[EN] The Church is holy (perfect), while most of us are not. On the contrary, assuming that the true Church could automatically shield us from sins, we going from bad to worse, often
missing the essence of Orthodoxy.
[EN] How many Orthodox people aren’t either ignorant of their faith, easily willing to mix it with heretical beliefs, either irrationally intrasigent? If only we all had the love of St. Columba (or other saints) for the pagans to whom he was bringing the Word 15 centuries ago!
[EN] God willing, I hope that the Orthodox believers soon travelling to Iona will know how to hold on to the integrity of their faith, while sharing the truthfulness of it through genuine peace and joy, as skilfully crafted speeches, nor diatribes ever won anyone’s heart.
