[EN] When I first saw them in Brighton, I thought they are another weird Brit stuff, although they were ‘made in China’. [RO] Când le-am văzut prima oară în Brighton, m-am gândit că sunt alte ciudăţenii britanice, deşi erau ‘made in China’.

[EN] The more civilised the country you’re in, the less obvious seems the emergency. [RO] Cu cât este ţara mai civilizată în care te afli, cu atât mai puţin evidentă pare urgenţa.

[EN] As long as you’re not doing anything adventurous and not travel to remote, scarcely inhabited areas… I mean. [RO] Câtă vreme nu faci nimic adventuros şi nu călătoreşti către zone îndepărtate, puţin locuite... vreau să zic.

[EN] If you have no ‘fuel’ for a phone call, how likely is that everyone else around you have the same problem? [RO] Dacă nu ai suficient ‘combustibil’ pentru un apel telefonic, cât de probabil este ca toată lumea din jurul tău să aibă aceeaşi problemă?

[EN] And who hasn’t got a mobile phone in an EU country, in our times?! [RO] Şi cine n-are un telefon mobil într-o ţară UE, în vremurile noastre?!

[EN] Actually, these emergency mobile phone batteries (here, here, here) can be extemely useful these days. [RO] De fapt, aceste baterii de urgenţă pentru telefonul mobil (aici, aici, aici) pot fi extrem de utile în aceste zile.

[EN] Especially when you happen to be in parts of Romania swept by blizzards, facing blackouts of 4-5 days… [RO] În special când se întâmplă să fii în părţi din România măturate de viscole, înfruntând pene de curent de 4-5 zile…

[EN] …and you’re in need of making repeated calls or send SMSes to emergency services that are overwhelmed by a ‘Big Freeze’. [RO] …şi ai nevoie să faci apeluri disperate sau să trimiţi SMS-uri către servicii disperate care sunt copleşite un ‘Mare Îngheţ’.

[EN] Too bad that such batteries can’t save Nokia… But maybe states should store them along with fuel, blankets and food. [RO] Păcat că astfel de baterii nu pot salva Nokia... Dar poate că statele ar trebui să le stocheze alături de combustibil, pături şi alimente.

[EN] How long until a ‘clever guy’ makes a big business of of these items ? [RO] Cât o mai fi până ce un ‘băiat deştept’ va face profit din aceste produse?

It’s said that all roads lead to Rome… [Se zice că toate drumurile duc la Roma…]

…and so do mine these days. I’m in the Eternal City for an exchange programme about migration within the EU, coordinated by ECAS, a Brussels based NGO.

All is great, but for an ‘internet-holic’ like me, coping with scarce access to the blessings of Information Technology (that we often take for granted) is a bit difficult.

I’m living in a typical Roman condominium built in 1885, with an archaic lift for two persons, with no TV (I couldn’t care less), a mobile telephony (Orange in particular) signal only vaguely reaching my room, and no free wi-fi :-(

Instead of these, there’s a symphony of old ladies chatting all day long in the building, of children playing long after what would be ‘bedtime’ in other countries, of slammed doors, and footsteps on stairs…

On top of these, every now and then, I can hear airplanes and church bells, breathe in the smell of various dishes being cooked, while seeing everything from underwear to bed sheets drying in the sun.

What’s more typically Italian than that? Or more unlike what I experienced in the UK? Where most British houses appear to be perfectly quiet, perfectly ordered, and underwear remain something so categorically ‘private’.

Let none of the above be understood as a ‘complaint’; it’s truly enjoyable to experience Rome this way! The only little regret is that I can’t blog in real time about it!

[EN] These days, probably all of us get overwhelmed with stupid Christmas messages in our e-mail inboxes, plus mobile phones... all kinds of stereotypical ‘best wishes,’ which mean nothing for anyone. [RO] Zilele acestea, probabil că toţi ajungem copleşiţi de stupide mesaje de Crăciun în căsuţele de e-mail şi în telefoanele mobile... toate soiurile de ‘urări de bine’ stereotipe, care nu înseamnă nimic pentru nimeni.

[EN] What a waste (of time + money), out of which only mobile operators earn, as I’m sure that the Brits (who send 1.5 billion SMSes a week) are equally uninspired as Romanians, and they need ideas for Christmas messages! [RO] Ce risipă (de timp + bani), din care nu câştigă decât operatorii de telefonie mobilă, căci sunt sigur că britanicii (care trimit 1.5 miliarde de SMS-uri pe săptămână) sunt la fel de neinspiraţi ca românii şi au nevoie de idei pentru mesaje de Crăciun!

[EN] What are words like... ‘happy’, ‘prosperity’, ‘goodness’, ‘light’, ‘joy’, ‘gifts’ or ‘blessing’... without any reference to The Nativity of Christ? Absolutely nothing! [RO] Ce sunt cuvinte precum... ‘fericit’, ‘prosperitate’, ‘bunătate’, ‘lumină’, ‘bucurie’, ‘daruri’ sau ‘binecuvântare’... fără vreo referire la Naşterea lui Hristos? Absolut nimic!

[EN] I don’t want any blessing (?!) form this satanic spirit of Christmas, nor any gifts from this masonic myth of Santa Claus, therefore I thank everyone who spared me form any impersonal SMS or e-mail. [RO] Eu nu vreau nicio binecuvântare (?!) de la acest satanic spirit al Crăciunului, nici daruri de la mitul masonic al lui Moş Crăciun, aşadar le mulţumesc tuturor celor care m-au scutit de vreun SMS impersonal sau e-mail.

[EN] This message of mine is also collective, but a message sent to more people doesn’t mean it’s an uninspired or stereotypical one – therefore, I thank those who sent me anything from their heart, be it a quotation from a book! [RO] Deşi acest mesaj al meu este tot colectiv, dar un mesaj trimis mai multora nu însemnă că este unul neinspirat şi stereotip – prin urmare, le mulţumesc celor ce mi-au trimis orice din inimă, fie şi un citat dintr-o carte!

[EN] Not global warming, not the orchestrated economic crisis, not any of Bush’s wars (or Obama’s – for the fools who still believe that he won’t bomb any country!), not the lack of economic development, not corruption, nor the ‘Big Bang experiment’ chain us down to miserable lives, and threaten our future. [RO] Nu încălzirea globală, nu orchestrata criză economică, nu războiale lui Bush (sau ale lui Obama – pentru proştii care încă cred că el nu va bombarda vreo ţară!), nu lipsa de dezvoltare economică, nu corupţia, nici ‘experimentul Big Bang’ nu ne ţin înlăţuiţi de vieţi nefericite şi ne ameninţă viitorul.

[EN] The end of the world will not come for anything else, if not for the hundreds of millions of unborn children who have been aborted for the past half a century!!! [RO] Sfârşitul lumii nu va veni pentru nimic altceva dacă nu pentru sutele de milioane de copii nenăscuţi care au fost avortaţi în ultima jumătate de veac!!!

[EN] There’s no greater crime, but the bigger it is, bigger still our indifference... won't the punishment match our inequities? [RO] Nu-i o crimă mai mare, dar pe cât este mai mare, pe atâta mai mare este nepăsarea noastră... oare nu va fi osânda pe măsura relelor noastre?

[EN] “What’s wrong with the author of this blog?”…many will ask. He was a decent guy… A bit weird, of course, but not quite mad. [RO] “Ce-i în neregulă cu autorul acestui blog?”...vor întreba mulţi. Era un tip decent... Un pic ciudăţel, desigur, dar nu tocmai nebun.

[EN] Well, I am not mad (anyway, my defence is irrelevant – what madman would say he is mad? :-), I’m just offering a strong warning that I believe in, instead of offering any tasteless Christmas wish. [RO] Ei bine, nu-s nebun (oricum, apărarea mea este irelevantă – ce nebun ar admite că el este nebun? :-), doar ofer o avertizare puternică în care cred, în locul unei urări de Crăciun fără niciun gust.

[EN] I don’t know anything about how Orange works in the UK, as for using your Vodafone subscription in the UK, don’t bother to ask anyone. I did, in at least a couple of their stores, plus inquiring Romanians living in the UK. [RO] Nu ştiu nimic despre cum merge Orange în UK, cât despre folosirea abonamentului Vodafone Ro în UK, nu vă obosiţi să întrebaţi pe nimeni. Am făcut-o eu, în cel puţin două magazine de-ale lor, plus iscodind români din UK.

[EN] Not only that the prices for calling Eastern Europe are no match for those offered by O2, yet if your mobile terminal is blocked within the Vodafone Ro network, don’t expect: 1) that it will also work in the Vodafone UK network, nor 2) that you’ll find a Vodafone store that could offer the unblocking service – not even for a fee! [RO] Nu numai că preţurile pentru sunatul în Europa de Est nu se compară cu cele oferite de O2, însă dacă aparatul îţi este blocat în reţeaua Vodafone Ro, nu te aştepta: 1) că va funcţiona de asemenea în reţeaua Vodafone UK, nici 2) că vei găsi un magazin Vodafone care să ofere serviciul de deblocare – nici măcar contracost!

[EN] In various little Arab, Pakistani, Indian etc stores you could have your mobile unblocked, for prices around £ 14-15. But’s not worth the fuss (some said they needed at least 3, and even 12 – ?! – hours for my model of Nokia 6234!) – I made up my mind. [RO] În diferite prăvălioare arabe, pakistaneze, indiene ai putea să-ţi deblochezi telefonul, pentru preţuri în jurul a £ 14-15. Dar nu merită osteneala (unii ziceau că au nevoie de 3, ba chiar 12 – ?! – ore pentru modelul meu de Nokia 6234!) – m-am decis eu.

[EN] So, I bought myself a rather primitive (but brand new) Nokia 1110i, for £ 30. A Chevening Fellow smarter than me got a similar phone, plus a SIM card, for only £ 25! [RO] Astfel, mi-am cumpărat un model mai degrabă primitiv (dar nou-nouţ) de Nokia 110i, pentru £ 30. Un Chevening Fellow mai isteţ decât mine şi-a luat un telefon similar, plus un SIM card, pentru numai £ 25!

[EN] Another thing about which I couldn’t say it’s worth only “trying,” but I fully recommend buying it is the O2 phone card that I’ll probably use every time I am in the UK. It’s clearly the immigrant’s card :-), as its brochure is written in many languages from this part of the world, including Polish, and… Romanian. [RO] Alt lucru despre care nu pot spune doar că merită “încercat”, ci recomand cumpărarea ei este cartela telefonică O2 pe care o voi folosi probabil de câte ori mă aflu în UK. E clar cartela imigrantului :-), căci broşura ei este scrisă în multe limbi din partea asta a lumii, inclusiv poloneză şi... română.

[EN] I seriously doubt that (at least in the year 2008 A.D.) someone could get a better offer for calls to Eastern Europe. The card (around £ 5) is free if bought with an initial credit of £ 20. [RO] Mă îndoiesc serios că (cel puţin în anul 2008 d.Hr.) cineva ar putea găsi o ofertă mai bună pentru apeluri către Europa de Est. Cartela (în jur de £ 5) e gratis dacă o cumperi cu un credit iniţial de £ 20.

[EN] For every credit top-up of minimum £ 10, you get up to 50 minutes of free international calls!!! No kidding, yet the disadvantages are that you can only call for free a landline number, and you have to top up every month to be eligible for this offer. [RO] Pentru orice adăugare de credit de minimum £ 10, obţii până la 50 minute de convorbiri internaţionale gratuite. Nu glumesc, dar dezavantajele sunt că nu poţi suna decât un număr de pe linie fixă şi trebuie să cumperi credit în fiecare lună ca să beneficiezi de ofertă.

[EN] While prices for calling landlines in the UK seemed to eat up my credit like Vodafone roaming (12-15 text messages sent + answering two brief calls = over € 17!)... [RO] În vreme ce a suna pe fix în UK părea să îmi mănânce creditul ca roamingul Vodafone (12-15 mesaje trimise + răspunzând la două apeluri scurte = peste € 17!)...

[EN] ...calling mobile to mobile in the UK from an O2 card is made at comparable prices to those of other operators on this huge market: the omnipresent (with the same faults everywhere) Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile. [RO] ...sunatul mobil pe mobil în UK de pe o cartelă O2 se face la preţuri comparabile cu ale celorlalţi operatori pe această uriaşă piaţă: omniprezentul (cu aceleaşi cusururi peste tot) Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile.

[EN] Ultimately, adding credit is very convenient. You are given a plastic card (like a credit one), and you can do it yourself at automatons, or ask for this service at the counter in grocery stores, pharmacies, supermakets or petrol stations. Ţi se dă un card de plastic (ca unul de credit) şi poţi să o faci singur la automate sau să ceri acest serviciu la tejghea în băcănii, farmacii, supermarketuri sau benzinării.
