[EN] It’s a very beautiful place in England (and well known around the world) where I haven’t been to (yet?!).

[EN] A little city surounded by intellingent (high tech) businesses, of no more than 110,000 inhabitants.

[EN] Of whom a fifth are students from all over the world, learning about almost everything, from medical sciences to theology.

[EN] A place with an aristocratic fragrance (pics 1, 20) of times of yore; I don’t know if the locals also have aristocratic airs :-)

[EN] With colourful gardens (5), bustling little streets (4, 14, 16), fairs (3), typically British  houses (9, 10, 18), even some homeless people (8) many bikes (14, 20),  and… boats (2, 17).

[RO] Cu grădini colorate (5), străduţe pline de viaţă (4, 14, 16), târguri (3), case tipic britanice (9, 10, 18), chiar şi oameni fără adăpost (8), multe biciclete (14, 20) şi… bărci (2, 17).

[EN] An elitist environment where only the brightest enter, (allegedly) to get out even smarter, prone to ‘success’.

[RO] Un mediu elitist unde doar cei mai străluciţi intră, (chipurile) pentru a ieşi şi mai deştepţi, înclinaţi către ‘succes’.

[EN] If only intellectual achievements guaranteed for kindness of heart, instead of barren individualism, and if they were premises for a happy and meaningful life!

[RO] Măcar de ar garanta realizările intelectuale bunătatea inimii, în loc de un invidualism steril şi de ar fi premise ale unei vieţi fericite şi pline de rost!

[EN] A very beautiful spot of London, Belgravia, where the Romanian Cultural Centre (ICR – London, pictured here) is located.

[RO] Un foarte frumos loc din Londra, Belgravia, unde Centrul Cultural Român (ICR – Londra, pozat aici) este localizat.

[EN] Inaccesible to common mortals, it is one of the richest neighbourhoods of the world, where most houses (up to 99%) are incredibly white.

[RO] Inaccesibil muritorilor de rând, este unul dintre cele mai bogate cartiere ale lumii, unde cele mai multe case (până la 99%) sunt incredibil de albe.

[EN] Is the money of most notable residents (like Roman Abramovich) where equally white?!

[RO] Sunt şi banii celor mai notabili rezidenţi (precum Roman Abramovici) la fel de albi?!

[EN] Although spared of rioters’ fury, it is not spared of crime, however, people living there can afford paying for little private armies.

[RO] Deşi ferit de furia răsculaţilor, nu este chiar ferit de criminalitate, totuşi, oamenii care locuiesc acolo îşi permit să plătească pentru mici armate private.

Din raidurile mele prin inima Scoţiei (19) [From my forays into Scotland's heartland]

Fără îndoială, primăvara este frumoasă oriunde în UK şi mereu mult-aşteptată, dar mai ales când vine după o a treia iarnă aspră consecutivă.

Cine s-a săturat de peisajul urban din Edinburgh sau Glasgow, iar aceste oraşe nu le mai alină dorul de natură, să dea o fugă în... Scottish Borders.

De aş putea, imediat aş pleca în acest colţ din Scoţia, unde cum intri – pe la primele ore după răsărit, dacă mergi cu autobuzul de noapte – te simţi ‘pe alt tărâm’.

După cum îi zice numele (borders = graniţe), zona marchează trecerea dintre Anglia şi Scoţia şi a fost scena a numeroase bătălii (însoţite de distrugeri) de-a lungul secolelor.

Poate de aceea a şi rămas mai înapoiată economic, căci puterea economică a Scoţiei stă în Central Belt (Scottish Midlands) şi în nord-est (Aberdeenshire).

Industrie mai puţină, locuitori mai puţini (doar 112,000 de oameni pe 4,700 km pătraţi), dar peisaje superbe şi parcă rămase neatinse de civilizaţie.

Adică de ‘relele’ a ceea ce numim civilizaţie, căci castele bine întreţinute (ca semne ale unei civilizaţii apuse) îţi ies adesea în cale precum peste tot în Scoţia.

Dincolo de acestea, ceea ce mi-au plăcut mie cel mai mult sunt căsuţele (cottages), multe dintre ele cu un nume scris pe o plăcuţă, precum ‘Rose Cottage’ (poza 6).

N-ai zice că locuiesc oameni ai zilelor noastre în aceste aparente ‘căsuţe de muzeu’, deşi multe n-or fi mai vechi de câteva decenii.

Toate păstrează acelaşi stil şi cu nimic nu le spulberă farmecul lipsa noroaielor, datorată drumurilor asfaltate până la fiecare portiţă sau prag.

Singura umbră asupra acestui tărâm desprins din alt veac – insignifiantă pentru mulţi contemporani, dar decisivă pentru mine – este decreştinarea lui.

Câte un lăcaş al Church of Scotland nedevenit altceva mai poţi găsi, dar este plin de ruine de mănăstiri şi în Scottish Borders, ca semn al vidului spiritual din UK.

[EN] I haven’t been there, but according to my reader C.L., this Alnwick Tree House in Northumberland is worth visiting. [RO] Eu n-am fost acolo, dar potrivit cititoarei mele C.L., această Alnwick Tree House din Northumberland merită vizitată.

[EN] And not just to pay a visit there, but also have a meal in this unusual restaurant offering organic food. [RO] Şi nu doar să faci o vizită acolo, ci şi să serveşti o masă în acest neobişnuit restaurant, care oferă mâncare organică.

[EN] That the owners describe as “one of the most beautiful and unique restaurants to be found anywhere in the world.” [RO] Pe care proprietarii îl descriu drept “unul dintre cele mai frumoase şi unice restaurante care se pot găsi oriunde în lume”.

[EN] Not be entirely supported by trees, but it’s ingeniuously build among trees. [RO] Nu este susţinută pe de-a întregul de copaci, dar este în mod ingenios construită între copaci.

[EN] And it’s eerie as the entire Alnwick Garden. [RO] Şi este stranie ca întreaga Alnwick Garden.

[EN] Full of all kinds of flowers and trees, some animals but also of poisonous plants. [RO] Plină de tot soiul de flori şi copaci, unele animale, dar şi de plante otrăvitoare.

It’s said that all roads lead to Rome… [Se zice că toate drumurile duc la Roma…]

…and so do mine these days. I’m in the Eternal City for an exchange programme about migration within the EU, coordinated by ECAS, a Brussels based NGO.

All is great, but for an ‘internet-holic’ like me, coping with scarce access to the blessings of Information Technology (that we often take for granted) is a bit difficult.

I’m living in a typical Roman condominium built in 1885, with an archaic lift for two persons, with no TV (I couldn’t care less), a mobile telephony (Orange in particular) signal only vaguely reaching my room, and no free wi-fi :-(

Instead of these, there’s a symphony of old ladies chatting all day long in the building, of children playing long after what would be ‘bedtime’ in other countries, of slammed doors, and footsteps on stairs…

On top of these, every now and then, I can hear airplanes and church bells, breathe in the smell of various dishes being cooked, while seeing everything from underwear to bed sheets drying in the sun.

What’s more typically Italian than that? Or more unlike what I experienced in the UK? Where most British houses appear to be perfectly quiet, perfectly ordered, and underwear remain something so categorically ‘private’.

Let none of the above be understood as a ‘complaint’; it’s truly enjoyable to experience Rome this way! The only little regret is that I can’t blog in real time about it!

[EN] On an ugly (cold & damp) November day, when I have no good news to share with my readers… [RO] Într-o urâtă (rece & umedă) zi de noiembrie, când nu am ce veşti bune să împărtăşesc cu cititorii mei...

[EN] …I thought that some pictures could warm us up a little. There’s so much beauty left in the world! [RO] …m-am gândit că nişte poze ne-ar putea încălzi un pic. Mai este atâta frumuseţe rămasă pe lumea aceasta!

[EN] These are images from Rye, a little English seaport with some 4,000 inhabitants… a little paradise, it seems… [RO] Aceste sunt imagini din Rye, un mic port maritim englezesc cu vreo 4,000 de locuitori… un mic paradis, se pare…

[EN] Whether the people living in Rye are aware of how blessed they are, whether they are thankful to the Lord for this, whether they truly know Him or not… I couldn’t know. [RO] Dacă oamenii care locuiesc în Rye sunt conştienţi de cât de binecuvântaţi sunt, dacă sunt mulţumitori Domnului pentru aceasta, dacă Îl cunosc într-adevăr sau nu... n-aş putea şti.

[EN] I only wonder how would it be to be living in such a quiet place, away from all the madness of this world, to have an ordinary job, to be a fisherman there or to sell little nothings to tourists all day long… [RO] Mă întreb doar cum o fi să trăieşti într-un astfel de loc liniştit, departe de toată nebunia lumii, să ai o slujbă obişnuită, să fii un pescar acolo ori să vinzi mici nimicuri turiştilor cât e ziua de lungă...
