[EN] Not worth trying in the UK / [EN] Nu merită încercat în UK (20)

[EN] Hard to guess what ‘secrets of journalism’ can be learned for so much money in just 2 days – I didn’t try those courses, nor would I recommend them.

[EN] It’s but an illussion: just like modelling courses that can’t make anyone more beautiful, nor guarantee any succcessful modelling career.

[EN] Similarly, what could these ultrashort journalism courses truly offer apart from a more or less pleasant (if the smart guys teaching are funny!) means of wasting time?

God’s place in a humanist society (16) [Locul lui Dumnezeu într-o societate umanistă]

Let’s assume that Stephen Hawking were right: there is no God, no afterlife, no Heaven :-(

Then, why would some British youngsters be searching for a meaning beyond the utter meaninglessness of ‘modern life’ and its array of dead-end choices?

Why would university walls and shop windows – from East Sussex to Fife, and farther north, to the Scottish Highlands, according to what I saw and photographed – be full of posters like these ones...

....advertising religions that promise meditation, peace, wisdom,  introspection, vision, illumination, self-discovery, fulfillment?!?!?!

Most secular Brits appear to have ceased thinking of any metaphysical dimension of life.

As Pavlov’s dogs, they are being conditioned to judge that “(any) religion = (mostly) bad”, thus they frown upon any religious weirdos (like me :-).

Nevertheless, some are seaching for something that makes sense in a world deprived of a spiritual perspective of daily reality.

They are yearning for their Maker, for God – exactly for the One Who was turned into a ‘bad character’ in contemporary political correct societies.

If this ‘science guru’ was right, then all his compatriots soaking with consumerism, hedonism, binge drinking and promiscuity would be right to take that self-destructive path in life.

The silly ones would be those looking for meanings, including Hawking, wouldnt they?

Science, among everything else, would remain altogether futile.  “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die” – that would make a perfect philosophy.

Attempting to explain the Universe, as a ‘science ayatollah’ like Hawking does, would be equally meaningless.

The Lord may find a way to the hearts of those genuinely seeking for Him, even to those who are lured like sheep to a wolfs lair by all these prophets, gurus, visionaries...

They are but unscrupulous people selling illusions (see these posters!), whose trade is as often morally damaging and socially dangerous as human trafficking is.

On the flip side, it’s most likely that He will never reveal Himself to those who are self-confidently (but utterly unscientifically!) decreeing “Thou don’t exist!”.

It’s quite a sad character this Hawking, and emblematic for the way Britons claim that they are better off without any concept (at least!) of God.

God’s place in a humanist society (15) [Locul lui Dumnezeu într-o societate umanistă]

As the Perfidious Albion is about to join France, the USA & other more or less reluctant ‘allies’ in bombing Libya, the invoked cause of war is – time and again! – the need to provide the ‘security’ of the Libyan people.

If only things were as easy as the slogan “Bomb the tyrant, liberate the people!” (often used by leaders of the ‘free world’) goes! As a matter of fact, the elusive (and quite improbable for now) ‘liberation’ could only bring more misery for the Libyans.

It’s so sad to witness that Libyans are such misfortunate human beings who can only be liberated by bombs, and whose security can only be provided by destruction brought upon their country…

Is it because they happen to have a religious faith? That is they are ‘enslaved by faith’, as humanists could put it… Oh, it would have been so easy to offer them more ‘security’ to them, had they been a secular country!

More CCTV means more security for you! – Britain’s Big Brother says on posters that passers-by can’t miss, and he is as hypocritical as the self-proclaimed Brother Leader in Tripoli.

Any Big Brother – in the UK or any other civilised nation for that matter – promising a ‘free’ and ‘secure’ world without its Maker is as mad as the Brother Leader of the al-Jamahiriya.

Any God-less society could one day be what Libya is today, a land where the will of one man is done. Sooner or later, people are bound to look for a ‘saviour’ who would drag them out of the abyss where irreligiousness took them.

Yet there is only One true Saviour – all other fake saviours (including the so far benign Barack Obama who surfed a tsunami of Obamania in 2008) have only brought disasters after disasters upon mankind. Unfortunately, they will keep doing so till the end of times...

Witty bits from what I learned in the UK (17) [Vorbe de duh din ce am învăţat în UK]

Here’s another bit of sad truth, not only about Britain, but concerning any other ‘civilised nation’ in the EU.

I would come across it at HM Treasury, on Horse Guards Road, Westminster, close to Whitehall, the famous London street packed with British government offices running from the UK Parliament to Trafalgar Square.

.

The following message was written on a wall in the men’s toilet inside the Treasury building:

Are you water wise? In the UK, every person uses on average 155 liters of water a day, compared to developing countries that only use 20 liters.

Do such wise people, as I assume those working for Her Majesty’s Treasury are, need such pieces of advice that the photoholic I couldn’t miss?

And if even they are ‘water unwise’ what about the rest of us?! I wonder who truly understands that these ‘little mistakes’ we make, such as leaving the tap running for a minutes at a time, are costlier than our ‘carbon footprint’.

.

It is it pretty hypocritical that people everywhere are concerned with global problems, yet remain unable to solve ‘little problems’ like saving water.

About public transport in the UK (15) [Despre transportul în comun în UK]

I must admit I did not commute through ‘unsafe neighbourhoods’ while I was in the UK, however, as far as I am concerned, I can say that I always felt reasonably safe and unthreatened in all British means of public transport that I used.

Even when a well oiled man was sleeping near me on a night journey in a Megabus, when a bunch of teenagers who had no ticket quarreled with a train conductor, or when a train was stopped in the middle of a field.

In spite of my (albeit limited) personal experience, I noticed many posters warning against vandalism, which gave a phone number to passengers, where they could “call in confidence and help stop vandals in their tracks.”

Unlike what I often wrote about Big Brother-ish excesses (see here, here, here, here or here!) in the UK, I don’t find it an exaggeration to offer such a number to people, and I can only decry that, in Romania, few people would bother to denounce such ‘common’ acts.

Around 20,000 railway offences are reported yearly in Britain, including trespassing dangerous restricted areas, vandalism, placing obstuctions on the line, stone throwing and serious criminal damage.

It often happens that vandals are just exuberant graffiti artists, nevetheless, I don’t it’s worth condoning their offences. One can hardly separate artistic creations from destructive acts leading to injury or death.

Brits are losing their patience to queue [Britanicii îşi pierd răbdarea de a sta la coadă]

People waiting orderly and patiently in a queue, wherever and whenever, is known to be a quintesentially British thing.

I could bear witness that such queues were living evidence of British civility, and no one or very few Brits appeared to be ‘disgusted’ with having to wait in a queue, as it often happens in Romania.

Since the days when food was rationed, an entire ‘culture of queuing’ developed in Britain, with an array of posters reminding people where to wait in order to be served.

Apart from these, especially designed pieces of urban furniture try to manage the crowds. I have already given a example, and here’s another one – a bus shelter where passengers can wait in line on one of the windy bridges of Edinburgh.

However, it seems that this example of British civility is on the wane, as Brits are less and less willing to queue, even if this means renouncing the pleasure of shopping.

In 2004, the average time a Briton was willing to queue in a high street shop was five minutes. That dropped to two minutes, while 51% of Brits won’t even enter a store where they notice a queue. It seems impatience grew as online shopping increased.

Femeile în UK (19) [Women in the UK]

ANTI-concursul de frumuseţe MISS BRIGHTON AND SUSSEX UNIVERSITY.

Din viaţa studenţească (8) – Moartea, o afacere ca oricare alta [Student life – Death, a business like any other]

God’s place in a humanist society (4) [Locul lui Dumnezeu într-o societate umanistă]

One of the defining features of the irreligious human being (the typical British man or woman of today) is the constant – albeit hidden behind the apparently comfortable life offered by the Welfare State (more about this concept here, here, here or here) – fear for one’s life.

Even worse than in Romania under Ceauşescu, people all over the UK are being put on guard about potential enemies, health hazards, criminals on the prowl, and all sort of risks to their well-being.

If you suspect it, report it! – Big Brother warns you every few hundred meters in British cities. You may have no idea of what this ‘it’ (the danger, the threat, the foe you have to face) actually is, nevertheless, this is of little importance. You may not know what ‘it’ means, but you surely fear for your life.

After centuries of living away from Christ’s One and Only Church, after and accelerated secularisation of society, life of most Brits is emptied of any spiritual dimension. And reaching any firm belief about the meaning of life is of no interest to anyone.

This senseless speeding towards prosperity, achievement, and enjoyment leaves no time for metaphysical introspection... That would be such a waste when there is so much around to do, to see, to earn, to feel, to fight for, to consume... wouldn’t it? It doesn’t matter what life is, but it has to be lived to the full, and nothing is too much of an effort for protecting it as it is.

Therefore, little by little, what was once a despicable deed in Communist Romania – reporting to the authorities what you were suspecting about your neighbours, colleagues, subordinates, students, friends, and even family members – is turning into a civic (I wanted to say patriotic, but that’s tipically American, not British! :-) duty in the UK.

You don’t have to know anything for sure; it’s just enough... to suspect. Nor do you have to assume any responsibility for your allegations – which are supposingly well-intended, but could very often prove malicious, as there’s not much left of the once famous British civility.

You don’t even have to give your name (2nd picture above – a traffic sign pole from Brighton), as your anonymity is guaranteed, in the greater interest of the common welfare, I presume :-)

And on what should people base their assumptions? Big Brother clearly shows this on a billboard (1st picture above – a billboard near a departure gate in Victoria Coach Station, London)... If you see or hear anything suspicious tell our staff or the police immediately. Trust your senses!

Oh, yeah, what could be more trustworthy for the irreligious and hedonist Brits than their senses? Additionally, what could be more convenient for Big Brother’s plans of setting-up a surveillance society that to reduce human beings to animals which couldn’t put their trust in anything else than their own senses, and by no means in the only Saviour of mankind – Jesus Christ?

About public transport in the UK (6) [Despre transportul în comun în UK]

The promise made in the first image (taken somewhere in the NW outskirts of Edinburgh) – Beat the traffic, take the bus – is generally kept thoughout the few UK cities I’ve been to.

There’s no doubt that one is better off travelling by bus than by personal car, both from a financial perspective, and form a practical point of view – you can reach your destination faster, in a relatively comfortable manner, and you’re spared of the fuss concerning the need to find parking space for your car.

How come the Brits can keep this promise? Well, I don’t think this has something to do exclusively with law enforcement, but with the fact that – as far as I could tell (again, I may be wrong in my assumptions and observations) – British motorists are law-abbiding citizens. Whether education keeps the traffic in good order or Big Brother’s watchful electronic eyes – I couldn’t tell…

But there’s no way I could have missed noticing that drivers in this country generally respect the ‘sanctity’ of the bus lanes in a way most Romanian motorists don’t.

As a matter of fact, yielding to buses seems to be so much an ‘acquired behaviour’ in the UK, that a Romanian working in London (and one in a relatively high position, which I choose not to disclose; he was by no means an illegal immigrant) was complaining to me of how ‘silly’ the British motorists could be, for ‘queueing’ always on the busiest lanes, and not on the ‘free one’…

It’s only natural that the free one should be kept so for buses – but this is something Romanians are very slow to understand, aren’t they?

Din viaţa studenţească (5) – Un fel de ‘democraţie’ academică [Student life – A sort of academic ‘democracy’]

(6) [This alcohol, a Brit’s best friend ?]

(1) [This alcohol, a Brit's best friend?]
