If anyone thought that hiring a limousine for one’s wedding was an ‘un-British habit’ (as I presumed)… here’s the photographed proof that this assumption is wrong. I don’t know how popular this silly habit is throughout the UK, but I ran across it a couple of times in Scotland.

Honestly, I don’t see anything ‘romantic’ in this habit, and I don’t know what’s the ‘fun’ in hiring such a car for a wedding, apart from adding a pointless expense on the overall bill of the event. Nevertheless, who said that the Scots are ‘economical’ with their money?!

Studentul nostru, stăpânul nostru (9) [Our student, our master]

[EN] Worth Trying in the UK /[RO] Merită încercat în UK (6)

[EN] Among the things which are the tastier in the UK, I already recommended (full-heartedly!!!) trying some biscuits/cookies.

[EN] I guess these are some of my all-time favourite food products, which I first discovered in American TV-series (where children were mad about them), then I tasted them in America, and ultimately fell in love with them in the UK.

[EN] And if I were to give a brand, Millie’s Cookies would be the first to mention, not only thanks to their availability, but also because they really taste better than many home-made sweets that I ever tried, let alone other ‘industrial biscuits’.

[EN] These Millie’s Cookies can be found anywhere in the UK: most train/tube stations, big shopping centers, markets…

[EN] Daily baked, with an appealing marketing strategy (the more you buy, the less you pay per piece)… I really like them.

[EN] So, anyone willing to make me a surprise when coming from the UK, a box of Millie’s Cookies would make a great idea, especially since I’m not fond of useless souvenirs :-) [RO] Aşadar, oricine vrea să-mi facă o surpriză când se întoace din UK, o cutie de Millie’s Cookies ar fi o idee grozavă, mai ales de vreme ce nu-s iubitor de suveniruri inutile :-)

[EN] I don’t have any illusions about these cookies being healthier than other food products – I suppose there’s a lot of ‘standardization’ in obtaining the ingredients and the cooking ‘procedures’.

[EN] However, in my view, they are both 1) very tasty + 2) really able to appease one’s hunger.

The end of Scottish dream of independence? [Sfârşitul visului scoţian la independenţă?]

As someone who felt very good in Scotland, without necessarily becoming a fan of the Scottish separatists, I wanted to start a whole new serie dedicated to this theme. As a ‘neutral’ foreigner, I honestly couldn’t take sides, although I am – theoretically – against separatist movements.

Could an independent Scotland be a viable state?... Would it be accepted as the 28th member of the EU?... What an interesting PhD research would make to compare Kosovo’s independence with that of Scotland, wouldn’t it?... Would all Scottish regiments be withdrawn from UK military operations abroad?... How would the English and the Scots share the revenue from the oil in the North Sea?... What would happen to the Scots in the Westminster Government or to the English people living as far northwards as the Scottish Highlands?...

I would have had dozens of questions like these, if the UK Government hadn’t bought and important percentage of shares from the Royal Bank of Scotland and Bank of Scotland/Halifax. Many people say (click here, here or here) this is the demise of the Scottish (foolish?!) dream of independence, that we are now witnesssing a dead cause which is awaiting burial.

If only some of my Scottish friends (of whom I know only one who regularly checks this blog :-) could post their opinions here! A full series of posts regarding a (possible, yet not very likely even before the current crisis) independent Scotland seems to have died… But did this political ambition also suddenly die, once these two banks were taken over? Or was it stillborn from the start?

Is the Scottish motto – seen in the image above at the entrance of Edinburgh Castle, and which could be translated as ‘No-one provokes me with impunity’ – but a memory from times of yore? I am personally afraid so… but let’s see if any Scot would post a comment here, trying to prove that Scotland will fight back :-)

[EN] A few wonders from the UK / [RO] Câteva minunăţii din UK (4)

[EN] I don’t know how pleasant is to live in these red houses, nor how expensive, yet I really find them very nice. And also… so typically British.

[EN] The pictures in this fourth episode were taken in...

(8) [This alcohol, a Brit's best friend?]

Witty bits from what I learned in the UK (7) [Vorbe de duh din ce am învăţat eu în UK]

Q: Of course, I was by no means a leftist before I came to the UK to study at the SEI as a Chevening Fellow, but now I’ve got even more liberal views on the economy, which were enhanced by the answer to the next question: What good are doing to the people those politicians who fear taking measures that would make thousands of workers jobless?

A: Absolutely none. Most ‘humane considerations’ of the leftists, which keep economically unviable (and often state-owned) companies alive, just not to let people out on the streets (or the pubs :-) are only meant to preserve their electoral chances. They hardly any economic justification.

On the long term, each electoral bribery like this (offering state contracts to a doomed company, just not to lose a certain constituency) backfires, as the younger one is fired, the sooner that person can requalify. When a factory is not closed down at the right time, it will, nevertheless, be forced out of the market by future competition.

Basically, there’s no good choice in choosing not to close down a factory expectedly, thus letting the heartless rules of the free market close it unexpectedly. Of course that I’m in favour of all the necessary social protection measures + workforce reconversion policies...

However, as long as a certain company (or even an entire industry) is on the way to bankruptcy, what can there be achieved by just delaying its fall?!

I wish I saw many other cars like these on the British roads, apart from the two illustrating this post, as I guess I’ve always been somekind of fan of this type of vehicules. Unfortunaly, they seemed to be as rare as ARO IMS cars have become on Romanian roads. Is it because the Brits are ashamed that their ‘national icon’ was bought buy the Indians from Tata Motors?

Anyway, owning a Land Rover and driving it through the Scottish Highlands, in the Australian outback, throughout the plains of East Africa or the Namibian desert wouldn’t have been a proof of vainly investing in a car. I guess that, at the time, it was one of the wisest and most useful investments one could make.

Maybe it’s just the end of an era, and they simply don’t make cars like these. Buying petrol or diesel for these monsters is just too expensive, yet they were incredibly reliable. It is estimated that 75% of all Land Rovers ever produced are still in use today. I wonder how many of the first 914 original ARO IMS vehicles, hancrafted from 1957 to 1959 are still functioning?

Sadly, the fact that I saw so few cars like thise on Brit soil doesn’t leave for me any better comment than saying sic transit gloria mundi...

Chestii d-astea, numai la britanici (16) [Things like these, only at the Brits]

God’s place in a humanist society (1) [Locul lui Dumnezeu într-o societate umanistă]

It’s been quite a while since I first meant to start this new series, and here I am doing it now. I tend to believe that, given the current composition of my readership, this will probably be another unpopular series, but I don’t care about this aspect. Writing popular stuff here should be among the last of my concerns… especially since I’m kind of fed-up with writing about popular issues :-(

All I want is to clearly state here things that I believe in, and to present this uncomfortable view of the UK, a country about which I will also keep writing a great deal of good things, showing lots of good examples that all nations could learn from.

A sad thing in the UK, and, actually, in the whole civilised world (?!), is the fact that the irreligious, atheist, secular, humanist people (or whatever they call themselves) don’t have any coherent system of ethical values, according to which what is good, and what is wrong could be defined.

Whatever the bullshit they are trying to sell to us, those who dream of ‘a bettter world’ based on human rights are no better than those who forced down our throats the so-called Socialist Ethics and Equity. NO SYSTEM OF ETHICAL VALUES CAN WITHSTAND IN THE ABSENCE OF GOD!!!

In the absence of a Maker Whom atheists so much hate (proving that HE IS just by their hatred – for how else reasonable minds, like they claim to have, could hate Him so much, if He were just a concept, a myth, an idea, a superstition, a fairy tale?!), everything is senseless...

All these humanist non-values cannot lead to salvation (that is dragging our soul out of absurdity into meaningfulness!), and neither to ‘peace and prosperity’ in this godless world, nor to true happiness, apart from the animal satisfaction of hedonistic impulses.

Therefore, people need a Big Brother to be told what is allowed or not permitted, what is advisable or not recommended, as they would be told whether to take the right or the left path. There’s no need of an ethical system in the this earthly paradise of people turned in Pavlov’s dogs.

Everywhere you look around in the UK (except some remote parts of rural Scotland that I have been to), you see CCTVs (Big Brother’s eyes), and a lot of carefully written inscriptions about what to do, and not to do. God willing, this is what the present series is going be about... it will deal with the way Big Brother tends to think on behalf of everyone else in such a secular country.
