UK’s motor vanity fair (25) [Bâlciul deşertăciunilor cu motor din UK]

A strange looking car photographed by my reader C.L., I-don’t-know-where in the UK, inside what seemed to be (from other pictures) a sort of exclusive little scrapyard, as it is known in British English.

Or, if any one is more familiarised with the name in American English – a junkyard. A place where a bunch of former fancy cars – spyders (or roadsters by their American name) – had been put to rest (or to rust :-).

This carmine (do I correctly identify the colour, girls?!) car appears to me as one that has once been some mighty ‘king of the roads’, maybe in the 1960s or 1970s. But I’ve got no idea about the brand.

To any reader from anywhere in the world ever landing on this blog page (and being better informed about this car that I am, of course) I can only say: please, share your knowledge with us!

Cod portocaliu [Code Orange]

De-a lungul ultimilor ani, de fiecare dacă când România a înfruntat condiţii meteorologice extreme, fusesem avertizaţi. Primisem semnalul că urmează ceva foarte rău (caniculă, furtună, inundaţie, ger etc.) – cod portocaliu.

La fel precum alte respectabile ţări UE, şi noi avem sisteme de avertizare timpurie, iar autorităţile statului pot să anticipeze întâmplările nedorite, pentru că ştiu când, unde şi cu ce amploare vremea o va lua razna.

Însă, fără excepţie, de fiecare dată suntem luaţi prin surprindere, de la vlădică la opincă, de la premierul-lopătar până la unii şoferi care s-or crede mai tari decât orice avertizări.

Am putea să ne amăgim că şi la alţii merg lucrurile la fel de prost când dă viscolul şi gerul (Big Freeze), invocând ultimele trei ierni aspre (poate vine şi a patra?!) din Anglia şi Scoţia. Cam tot aşa de mare este surpriza autorităţilor şi pe acolo...

Totuşi, clima Marii Britanii – şi aceasta de acum, darămite cea mediteraneană pe care i-o prevăd ideologii încălzirii globale – este destul de blândă, ca să justifice precauţii excesive.

Mai ales în condiţii de datorie publică consistentă, în UK nu prea se face să investeşti masiv în tehnologii anti-zăpadă. Las’ pe oamenii cu răspundere din Canada, Rusia ori Suedia să-şi bată capul cu aşa ceva...

Ei bine, poate că în UK o ‘merge şi aşa’ (tipic româneşte să-i zicem?), dar acolo ar fi avut loc măcar un mic cutremur politic de s-ar întâmpla, precum în România, ca viscolul să lase în urmă oameni morţi de frig în maşini.

Desigur, viaţa şi moartea sunt în mâna lui Dumnezeu, dar cine s-ar putea ascunde după scuza că “aşa a fost să fie”, când este vorba de un (prevăzut!) viscol?

Fiecare dintre noi vine şi se duce de pe lumea aceasta cum îi este rânduit, dar dacă adevărata cauză a morţii este ‘ciuma portocalie’, nicidecum gerul?

La opt ani de la îmbătarea cu promisiunile de stârpire ale ‘revoluţiei portocalii’, dezăpezirea unui kilometru de drum în România este de patru ori mai scumpă decât dezăpezirea unui kilometru de drum din Finlanda.

It would be reasonable to expect that in a country like Great Britain, where locomotives were invented some two centuries ago, trains would the best in the world in our times, wouldn’t it?

Well, that would be reasonable… But what’s reasonable these days in the world we live in? There’s no secret that – although faring well compared to what happens in Romania – the British rail transport lags behind those of France, Germany and other EU countries.

And it is certainly lightyears away from the Japanese rail system, where passengers can receive a ‘delay certificate’ if a train is only five minutes late!

As of 1994, trains in the UK have been operated by private firms, nevertheless, Britons haven’t seen any of the improvements in service quality that they had been promised ever since Margaret Thatcher, in the 1980s.

By all accounts, it was a botched privatisation. Britons ended up paying 40% more for a train ticket in their own country than they would pay in the Netherlands, Sweden or France.

To this day, France’s (SNCF) and Germany’s (Deutsche Ban) rail companies are state-owned and their performance is often acclaimed. On the other hand, since 1987, Japan’s complex rail system has been in the hands of some 16 private firms – and trains run even better.

It’s not the aim of this blog post to go into ideological speculations about privatisation. If it’s carried out, it should be done properly – the Japanese way, not the British way (read about this big failure: here, here, here, here, here, here, here or here).

Why do I fear that when the Romanian state-owned rail company (CFR) is eventually privatised, the result will look more like what happened in Britain than how privatisation was done in Japan?

România fără rost a lui I.L. Caragiale, o sută de ani mai târziu... [I.L. Caragiale’s aimless Romania, a hundred years later…]

În 2012, se vor împlini o sută de ani de când a murit Ion Luca Caragiale, după vreo şapte ani de autoexil în capitala Germaniei. Fără îndoială, şi pe atunci era traiul mai bun acolo, iar ora Europei (acum a EMU şi a UE) începuse deja să se dea la Berlin.

Era mai bine în acra, ordonata, eleganta şi cumintea – dar care avea să-şi dea cu mucii în fasole, în 1914-1918! – Germanie decât în preaplina de dulci neorânduieli Românie. Acolo lucrurile mergeau ceas, dincoace – parcă nu mai aveau vreun rost.

Şi pe atunci, printre primii care se stabileau peste hotare erau cei cu minţi luminate, care nu plecau neapărat de foame (s-ar fi dus şi flămânzii, dar cine i-ar fi primit?), ci de scârbă.

Aşa plecase şi Caragiale, pe care mă şi mir de nu şi-l revendică vreunul dintre indignaţii anti-sistem de pe străzi, citându-i cuvinte precum acestea: “Cauza dezastrului în care a căzut țara este numai – da, numai, nenorocita politică ce o fac partidele și bărbații noștri de stat, de patruzeci de ani încoace”.

Dar cine să-l mai citească pe Nenea Iancu altundeva decât pe bancnota de 100 de lei? Şi, de l-ar mai citi cineva, ce altceva şi-ar mai agonisi în suflet decât amărăciune?

Oare mai trebuie pomenite vorbele lui Caragiale, ca să priceapă mai marii zilei că “între masa poporului și clasele stăpânitoare este (cine ar putea tăgădui?) o prăpastie de interese și de sentimente, pe care aceste clase n’au știut-o umplea încetul cu încetul, ba chiar și-au dat toată osteneala s’o sape cât mai adânc”?!

“Orcare om cuminte peste putinţă să nu gândească”, socotea dramaturgul, dar iată cum, tâlcul celor ce se petrec, nu pare a-l pricepe tipătescul de la Cotroceni, dandanachii portocalii sau brânzoveneştii uselişti, nici pristandalele care – “curat constiuţional”, nu-i aşa? – dau în oameni ca în oala de fasole…

Oare o să ajungem chiar într-acolo, încât, puşi faţă în faţă cu reacţiunea primului cetăţean turmentat al ţării, nişte puhoaie de cetăţeni nu chiar atât de oropsiţi precum cei de la 1907 (dar poate la fel de iscusit aţâţaţi de peste hotare ca atunci) să sară la gâtul câtorva vampiri sugători de sânge ai boborului?

Şi de ar fi să iasă cu sânge – ipoteză, probabil, foarte convenabilă unei puzderii de interese – ar putea ieşi ceva bun şi pentru românul scos din răbdări, dar care îşi arde mânia în crâşmă, în faţa televizorului, pe Facebook sau într-un joc video? Nicidecum.

Putem înlocui liderii, ca să facem niţel mai suportabil sistemul, până la o vreme – să plece Băsescu (cât mai repede), să se facă alegeri (nefurate!), iar oamenii să voteze (şi să candideze, să se organizeze politic), nu să-şi închipuie că ar da cineva o ceapă degerată pe ‘protestul’ lor prin absenteism!

A schimba sistemul rămâne o jalnică amăgire. Nu-l putem schimba, căci toţi suntem parte din el. Şi este tot atât de greu a-l schimba (îmbunătăţi, înnoi, reforma etc) pe el precum este a ne schimba pe noi înşine.

Cine nu s-a folosit niciodată de ‘Lanţul slăbiciunilor’, cine n-a luat cam multişoare lucruri din jur în băşcălie, ca ‘Mitică’ a lui Nenea Iancu, cine n-a copiat la examene, cine n-a dat şpagă în viaţa lui sau cine şi-a ţinut cuvântul dat întotdeauna să ridice primul piatra contra sistemului!

Desigur că ar fi de dorit un ‘alt sistem’ şi o ‘viaţă mai bună’ (ideal, să fie clădite pe dragoste, bucurie, pace, îndelungă-răbdare, bunătate, facere de bine, credinţă, blândeţe, înfrânare, curăţie) – “împotriva unora ca acestea nu este poruncă”, ne aminteşte Sf. Apostol Pavel.

Doar că o astfel de viaţă mai bună rămâne complet inaccesibilă instrumentelor (voia proprie, mândria, egoismul, lăcomia, indiferenţa etc – manifestate chiar şi la cei ce s-ar decrie drept ‘oameni de bine’) cu care vrem noi să accedem la ea, iar Caragiale ne pune diagnosticul, la fel de valabil acum mai bine de un veac precum şi în zilele noastre:

“Încă de mult, lumea noastră românească nu mai merge la biserică. Oamenii de sus, de mijloc şi de jos au uitat de mult cărarea ce duce la locaşul icoanelor. Boieri, ostaşi, meseriaşi, negustori, dascăli, slujbaşi, mari şi mici s-au lepădat de datoriile către legea lor creştinească – toţi sunt astăzi liber-cugetători. (…)

Poate, după cum unii, să fie bine; poate că lipsa de aplecare spre religie să fie dovada unui spirit care se emancipează lesne de ideile învechite şi devine astfel mai susceptibil de idei noi, de progres intelectual şi moral.

Poate, dinpotrivă, după cum zic alţii, să fie de rău; poate că lipsa aceasta să fie dovada unei porniri la descreierare, la o scădere, la o înjosire progresivă intelectuală şi morală, la o din ce în ce mai mare pierdere a omeniei.

Nu ştiu deocamdată cine să zic că au dreptate – pesimiştii ori optimiştii; trebuie să mă gândesc mult la această întrebare”, se întreba Caragiale, iar dincolo (nu la Berlin, ci dincolo de moarte) sigur va fi aflat răspunsul.

La rându-mi, nu ştiu cât de creştin o fi fost acest om-monument al literaturii române, însă cu greu s-ar mai putea strânge dovezi pro sau contra după un veac de la moarte. Demn de menţionat este cum îi numeşte (de patru ori!) “foşti ortodocşi” pe compatrioţii săi în eseul citat mai sus.

Aşadar, deloc n-ar trebui să ne mire că, de-a lungul plinelor de haz opere de-ale sale, Hristos nu apare nicăieri amintit măcar (‘O făclie de Paşte’ nu intră între scrierile comice). Pentru că toate acele haioase personaje trăiau, de fapt, într-o absolută stare tragică.

Veşnic gonind după meschine patimi, antrenaţi în intrigi, ispitiţi de măreţe idei intrate cocoşat în cotloanele minţilor lor înguste, înrobiţi cu totul poftelor clipei prezente, dar fără urmă de deschidere spirituală, către Dumnezeu – aşa sunt personajele comice (?!) ale scriitorului născut într-un sat numit Haimanale.

Da, haimana (= om de nimic, fără căpătâi, derbedeu, vagabond) este omul pe lume, câtă vreme rămâne în afara sistemului lui Dumnezeu şi îşi raportează împlinirea şi sensul vieţii la tot felul de ale sisteme. Orice om fără El (cu atât mai grav dacă este un fost ortodox) nu face decât să vagabondeze între o amăgire sau alta.

Oricât ar dori cineva să schimbe sistemul social-politic – într-unul care să promită paradisuri pământeşti, prin respect, meritocraţie, prosperitate, bunăstare etc în lumea de aici – nu îşi va putea umple golul sufletesc nici de s-ar putea împlini cu vârf şi îndesat acele promisiuni.

A nu se crede că aş considera inutile protestele paşnice ori că subscriu la verdictul arogant al unui oarecare caţavenc portocaliu care îi declară “viermi” pe cei care îşi strigă nemulţumirea pe străzi.

Ar fi de dorit o justă păstrare a proporţiilor: da – pentru ‘Jos Băsescu’ (şi păstrarea acestei imperfecte democraţii, care, dând Cezarului ce-i al Cezarului, nu este încă incompatibilă cu vreo aspiraţie spirituală), nu – pentru ‘revoluţie anti-sistem’ sau altă grozăvie.

Cine mai ştie să citească şi altfel decât Nae Ipingescu, amicul lui Jupân Dumitrache, pe un plan care transcende tristele realităţile curente şi perspectivele asupra lumii mustind de coclite ideologii, va pricepe ce explicaţia de mai sus a noţiunii de haimanale...

Astfel, tot în cheie spirituală mă întreb: oare întâmplător are loc noua “rivoluţie” taman în Piaţa Universităţii, unde şade gânditor Nenea Iancu alături de personajele sale? Or fi doar o oarecare creaţie de artă urbană sau este o oglindă – în care nu doar protestatarii, ci noi toţi, neam de haimanale şi foşti ortodocşi, să ne putem vedea?

Romanians to their former ‘orange’ hero: “Come out, ordinary mutt!” [Românii către fostul lor erou ‘portocaliu’: “Ieşi afară, javră ordinară!”]

What has been a common sight of the past years – in some corners of the EU (Greece, Italy), in countries from EU’s periphery (Georgia), in several Arab states (Egypt, Libya) and to a lesser extent in Russia – is finally taking place in Romania.

People are taking their anger to the streets, a few for senseless rioting (like in England), some others simply to shout that they’ve had enough of the current Government and especially of the incumbent president since December 2004.

Many of those contested learders around the world had always been villains, but Traian Băsescu – just like Mikheil Saakashvili, in Georgia, and Ukraine’s former president Viktor Yuschenko – was portrayed as an anti-communist and anti-totalitarian hero not so long ago (by the mid 2000s).

It was a ridiculous image, as he was a merchant marine captain, in charge of the largest vessel in the commercial fleet of communist Romania, and he had never hid (nor had he ever seemed ashamed of) his communist past.

Far from winning elections in landslide victories – and many believe he couldn’t have won at all without Uncle Sam’s help – he was, nevertheless, regarded as a ‘hero’ by his fanatic supporters, as well as by the mainstream media of the Western world.

In spite of this pedestal of respectability on which he was put and of his ceaseless rethoric against the corruption and presumed authoritarianism of others, his regime proved to be even more malignous than the previous ones in post-communist Romania.

Eager to get richer, as the former communists had done before them in the early 1990s, the orange gang around Băsescu has engaged in parasiting on the Romanian economy.

That was nothing new for democratic Romania. What would eventually draw the ire of many was the aggressive manner in which he understood to exert his prerogatives, as if the political establishment could be steered like the oil tanker that was once under his command.

Unlike his predecessors – a shrewd former commmunist, always able to build consensus, and a politically weak geology professor, who refused to run for a second term, admitting that “he had been defeated by the system” – Băsescu appears to be at ease only when at war with someone.

Because of his stubbornness and arrogance, the ‘orange hero’ would soon be vehemently contested. Halfway into his first term, the Parliament voted for his impeachment. According to the Constitution, he was suspendend, the President of the Senate temporarily replaced him, and Romanian voters were called to approve or nulify the decision of their representatives.

Back then, Romanians were to bee too blind to see that the bogus anti-system hero, promising to tread on all enemies of democracy and prosperity, was himself the product of a despicable system. Thus, he won the referendum confirming him in office by 70%.

It would be simplistic to believe foreign media reports (+ here) that the protests on the streets have to do with the VAT increase (from 19% to 24%) or with some of the harshest austerity measures taken anywhere in the EU: a 25% wage cut of public employees, and a 15% tax on pensions. The decisions were taken in May-July 2010, and Romanians bit the bullet.

Maybe not even the incident that ignited the protests – in the second week of January 2012, Băsescu arrogantly took on the chief of the Romanian emergency rescue service (SMURD), accusing him of opposing a controversial health reform – should be overestimated.

Nevertheless, it was the spark that enraged many, among the millions in whose hearts the ‘Orange Revolution’ (a term which was not as much used in Romania as it was in Ukraine, while the colour was equally widespread) into an ‘orange plague’.

People are angry with a lot of things in this country, among which Băsescu’s divisive manner of leadership and resentful attitude rise above any other reasons of discontent.

The president who promised “to turn to the people” (in his war against a corrupt system) has turned his back on the people that put their hopes in him.

Only insiders from the system who knew exactly when to dress in orange are better off, while many of Băsescu’s fans, his reluctant supporters (who thought he was a lesser evil), the mass of politically indifferent Romanians, and those how never voted for him are worse off.

Although demonstations were held in many cities (some 60) apart from Bucharest, very few are those protesting on the streets these days, compared to the level of discontent in Romania.

Most protesters are against the entire ruling class, the opposition (former communists + liberals) is united only in weakenesses, while most other law abiding citizens are ‘protesting’ on Facebook and blogs or cynically mock those on the streets.

It seems unlikely – but I like to never say never! :-) – that Băsescu and the Government he supports would resign and call earlier elections (as 2012 is electoral year anyway). Not even blocking unpopular reforms appears probable for now.

This happens because – thanks to the very same putrid system that he often criticized – Băsescu has managed to forge a ruling coalition. His party (PDL) is propped up by a new party (UNPR) made up of dissenters from the main opposition party (PSD).

With a popular support of 10%, Băsescu’s regime is currently a sort of elected dictatorship. The widespread (but far from being massive until now) protests and the president’s reaction to them will be one of the most serious test for the post-1989 Romanian democracy.

All in all, the hero of 2004-2009 has turned into public enemy number one. Like so often before in history, the same man who once personified so many hopes for the better became the personification of bitter disappointment.

Sadly, irrespective of all the anger and despair of many, there’s no true ‘feeling of revolution’ in the air, as if everyone knew that, with of without ‘captain Băsescu’, Romania would be still floating adrift boundlessly... As if only hitting an iceberg could possibly help this aimless nation come to its senses...

Novlimbă: pot oamenii să-şi ‘reîncarce’ bateriile şi să fie ‘deştepţi’ precum computerele? [Newspeak: can people ‘recharge’ their batteries and be ‘smart’ like computers?]

“Dacă nu am avea vicii, am fi nişte roboţi”, încuviinţa cineva vorba de duh a unui amic pe un oarecare blog – căruia nu aş avea de ce să-i fac reclamă.

După o asemenea mostră de înţelepciune a vremurilor noastre, n-ar trebui să fie de mirare ce venea scris în rândurile ulterioare. Bloggeru’ îşi cam mângâia cu vorbe dulci viciile (cafeaua, fumatul, dependenţa de net), ca pe nişte foarte dragi, nespus de paşnice şi complet nevinovate pisicuţe…

Cu toţii avem astfel de animale de companie, mult mai vinovate decât ne închipuim, dar n-aş vrea să intru acum în detalii despre vicii şi păcate. Mai ales că de dependenţa de net – mai puţin aceea de Facebook, ceea ce nu poate fi circumstanţă atenuantă :-) – sufăr şi eu.

Aş vrea numai să strâng puţin de buba acestor exprimări foarte curente în ultima vreme, care compară omul cu neînsufleţite creaţii de-ale sale.

S-a umplut lumea de exemple ale acestei orwelliene novlimbi (Newspeak). Ori că ne referim la română, ori la engleză (cele două limbi cu statut oficial egal pe MunteanUK :-), din ce în ce mai des observ cum măsura omenescului a devenit prestaţia unei maşinării.

Tot omul obosit vrea să ‘îşi reîncarce bateriile’, iar de se găseşte vreunul care îşi mai pune mintea la contribuţie – fără ca doar să regurgiteze ceva din informaţiile preasamblate şi preambalate cu care s-a îmbibat, inevitabil, din lumea din jur – se zice că este ‘deştept precum un computer’.

Iar despre un prichindel care era pe calea înfiripării unei culturi generale, deşi nu ajunseze nici măcar în clasa a patra, colegii mi-au spus că “el este Google-ul clasei”.

A crede că Google poate avea vreun soi de virtute în sine, pentru că ‘ştie’ multe, a socoti că un computer, oricât de performant, este ‘deştept’ de unul singur îmi pare la fel de stupid precum a crede că un om poate trăi numai din ‘reîncărcări’ ca o maşinărie.

A compara omul cu aceste născociri neputincioase (de nu ar fi puse în funcţiune tot de voinţa omului şi de nu s-ar fi creat prin strădaniile sale, dar mai ales cu îngăduinţa Făcătorului tuturor celor văzute şi nevăzute) este lipsit de sens.

Fiecare om este infinit mai mult decât un robot şi ceea ce îl umanizează nu sunt viciile (ci dimpotrivă: răstignirea lor!), iar ceea ce ne încarcă nu sunt cele la care râvnesc cei mai mulţi dintre pământenii zilelor noastre…

…mai mult somn, mai multă şi mai bună mâncare şi băutură, mai mulţi bani, mai multă faimă, mai mulţi prieteni (pe Facebook?!), mai multe cărţi citite, mai multe filme văzute, mai multe călătorii, nenumărate tipuri de distracţii şi plăceri ori alte felurite ‘experienţe’ irelevante în veşnicie.

Orice baterie reîncărcabilă (acumulator) are un ciclu de viaţă, la capătul căruia nu mai este posibilă vreo reîncărcare. Nouă, tocmai când ni se opreşte maşinăria (trupul – singurul în ale cărui pofte şi în a cărui bunăstare am investit), ni se vădeşte omul din noi.

De-abia când bateriile (burdihanele, urechile nesătule, ochii mereu doritori să vădă, dar şi cotloanele cu gânduri şi amintiri din creier) se golesc definitiv, omul este liber să fie el însuşi.

Dar mulţi n-or mai putea să fie, nu pentru că ar exista ‘nefiinţa’ unde se duc morţii (cum pretinde altă odraslă a novlimbii), ci pentru că bateriile sufletului, cele cu care trecem dincolo de moarte, vor fi goale.

Mai toate dintre ‘hainele care îl fac pe om’ – după cum zice o proastă vorbă omenească mai veche de inventarea bateriilor, a roboţilor sau a computerelor – vor cădea atunci de pe noi ca frunzele uscate de pe arbori.

Despuiaţi de amăgitorul frunziş, cei acum mereu grijulii să nu ne lăsăm bateriile neîncărcate vom spune şi noi “mă tem, căci sunt gol”, precum odinioară Adam. Însă teama de atunci a celor trăitori în netemere de Dumnezeu în vremea acestei vieţi nu va mai fi de vreun folos.

It wouldn’t be fair not to admit that followers of any religion who are teaching or studying at the University of Sussex can use a specially designated building (in the picture) for services, prayers or meetings of whatever kind.

From this point of view, the university is 100% politically correct, although not immune to a certain degree of pro-Islamic bias specific to some contemporary British institutions like the BBC.

Anyway, the university – which will be half a century old in 2012 – boasts itself with being completely secular, while also tolerant to all religious beliefs.

From another perspective, it’s strange – if not ridiculous – how such a humanist university uses as a motto a truncated verse from Psalm 46.

The moto says “Be still and know”, instead of “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Couldn’t have the humanist founders of the university found any other motto not reminding of this ‘mythical character’ (according to their views) Whose existence they deny?!

Femeile în UK (24) [Women in the UK]

Nu se îmbracă (sau ar fi trebuit să spun dezgolesc?! – că aceasta se petrece cu atâtea alte fete, inclusiv în România) pentru a atrage atenţia unor amorezi, fie ei şi unii pasageri.

Nici nu se vopsesc sau poartă bijuterii (sau poate nu e un nume potrivit pentru chestiile acelea?!) care să aibă, măcar la o primă vedere, vreun efect de înfrumuseţare.

De fapt, parcă scopul ar fi cu totul altul – să scandalizeze. Numai că efectul nu se mai produce în UK, unde aproape nimeni nu se mai miră de ciudăţenii, nu mai întoarce capul, nu mai strâmbă din nas, darămite să şuşotească ceva.

Că o fi un soi de politeţe (British Civility) a celor care îşi văd de treaba lor (mind their own business) sau o atotcuprinzătoare diferenţă – nu ştiu. Dar aş fi curios să aflu :-)

Este imposibil să nu remarci cât de indiferentă rămâne lumea pe străzi la mesajele vizuale pe care vor să le transmită unele adolescente din UK, care n-ar avea nicio şansă de a rămâne neremarcate în România.

De la un “Uite-o şi p-aia...” până la “Vai, tinerii din ziua de azi…” ori “Aşa ceva, pe vremea mea…”, fluierături, priviri încruntate sau zeci de capete întoarse, efectul ar fi garantat la noi.

O veritabilă atragere a atenţiei s-ar produce în România, faţă de Marea Britanie, însă tot nu ar însemna ceva care să merite efortul celor care or fi investit timp, bani, răbdare etc în a-şi modifica înfăţişarea în felul respectiv.

Mă rog, poate unii (unele) poate chiar aceasta vor să primească – aversiune – şi să consume drept hrană a sentimentului “da, chiar sunt altfel, am ceva de spus” toate privirile şi gesturile dezaprobatoare primite când ies în lume.

Din păcate, aproape nimeni şi aproape niciodată nu stă de vorbă cu ciudaţii, pentru a afla dacă au ceva de spus, cum or crede mulţi despre ei înşişi. Înfăţişarea este al lor Speakers’ Corner.

De câteva ori – din curiozitate tipic românească, jurnalistică sau pur şi simplu ca defect personal – m-am angajat în câte o mică pălăvrăgeală (chat) cu astfel de personaje.

De fiecare dată am înţeles că, dincolo de înfăţişarea scandaloasă, persoanele respective voiau să transmită ceva, căutau ceva, deşi nu ştiau ce anume. Şi ciudăţenia aspectului exterior nu este neapărat un semn de instabilitate psihică sau devianţă socială, cum adesea socotim.

Ba dimpotrivă. De mai multe ori am văzut tinere cu aparenţă de fete respectabile moarte de bete sau care te lăsau mut de cât de inteligente :-) erau. În acelaşi timp, cu astfel de ciudate, parcă aveai ce vorbi.

Iar gheaţa se sparge simplu. În loc de o grimasă (care uneori îţi vine involuntar), pune-ţi pe faţă un zâmbet (numai la filmări cu încetinitorul se pot face diferenţieri între zâmbetele sincere şi cele forţate!) şi spune ceva de genul:

“Ce culoare [ori altă chestie] interesantă!”, sau “Cum ţi-ai făcut părul aşa?”, sau “Ce vrea să reprezinte…?” sau “Împotriva a ce protestezi?”.

Aproape sigur şi aproape mereu vei avea parte de răspunsuri. În primul rând, chipul aparent fioros (din cauza decoraţiunilor bizare) din faţa ta se va însenina, uimit de întrebare şi de faptul că cineva chiar vrea să audă mesajul pe care – repet! – nici persoana respectivă nu-l ştie, nu şi l-a structurat încă în minte.

Pare jalnic ca, în lumea civilizată în care pretindem că trăim, să ai ceva de zis prin culori fistichii în păr ori prin nu doar unul (ci 3-4-5-etc) belciuge în nas, buze, urechi, sprâncene… Adică într-o manieră de comunicare specifică mai degrabă aborigenilor din Australia.

Este încă şi mai dureros că mulţi dintre semenii noştri au nevoi de astfel de caraghioase abţibilduri în a se adresa lumii din jur şi sigur nu ştiu de minunea “Câţi în Hristos v-aţi botezat, în Hristos v-aţi şi îmbrăcat”.

Totuşi, poate tocmai ei sunt leproşii cu care ar sta astăzi la masă Mântuitorul (nemascat, nedeghizat, la a Sa Epifanie). Sunt cei care poartă o autoindusă lepră, pe care nimeni nu le-o va da jos cu forţa sau cu predici, ci, poate, cu zâmbete şi curiozitatea de a-i întreba “ce vrei să zici?”.

A taste of the endless night [O pregustare a nopţii fără sfârşit]

Although there’s nothing to celebrate, most people in the ‘civilised world’ will ‘celebrate’ the departure (where to?!) and the arrival (where did it come from?!) of the New Year.

Passing from 2011 to 2012 will not bring any immediate change in anyone’s life – except for those dying that night, suffering from severe hangover, nausea, indigestion or falling victim to party accidents.

In spite of the lack of concrete significance, people of our times prefer to give various symbolic meanings to this winter night, to prepare for it, and to spend money for it as if it meant anything.

Actually, everything has to do with partying – eating, drinking, smoking, and… … … … [anyone feel free to fill in the blanks!]. I’ve never understood why couldn’t any other night (and why not day?!) be equally suitable for this purpose?

Many think that ‘this is life’ – they have never looked for another purpose and meaning of their existence, and New Year’s Eve is the typical night when hedonists do what they can do everyday, yet in an excessive manner.

So be it; most party goers are doing it because they want it. Who am I to preach against this perspective on life? We are all free to believe what we want. If I were to say something, I’d only remind everyone that there is only One Truth.

Pretty pathetic are those doing it reluctantly, just because everybody else is doing it. They will drag themselves to parties, hypocritically feign having fun, then eagerly go home.

All just because they would be ashamed to answer “I stayed home” or “I slept” to the question “What did you do on New Year’s Eve?”. As if everyone must do something – preferably something cool.

Some of those either having fun or those simulating the enjoyment will make New Year’s Resolutions, stitching together hopes, plans, expectations, wishes for one another…

Most are goals arising from this world, concerning this passing world, and ending in this world. We mark the passing of time, unaware of the One Who gave us time – time in general and personal time - and can take it away from us.

For those who deny God – and, among other things, embrace Darwinist views of our planet being billions of years old – celebrating the passage of the billionth part of the Earth’s existence is ridiculous.

But who would stop to consider such details? This is hardly a night of philosophical meditation, of introspection, and of soul searching…

Even of those dying in 2012, almost none would regard death as an impediment for attaining the petty resolutions made that night. Apart from Saints, who ever thinks that the next year ahead could their last one?

Partying and death seem so far apart, but after-party death is not uncommon at all. As a matter of fact, because of binge drinking and promiscuity, hard partying is often the prelude of immediate death (car accidents) of future deaths (abortions, cancers).

Aşteptând încă revoluţia mondială... (9) [Still waiting for the world revolution...]

N-or putea măsura vreodată statisticile câţi or fi fost aceia care, acum 22 de ani, aşteptau zorii libertăţii de a-L putea mărturisi pe Cel Care revoluţionează conştinţele de două mii de ani încoace şi oferă adevărata libertate...

În schimb, este sigur că la un alt fel de revoluţie şi alt fel de libertate se aşteptau majoritatea românilor – să se ‘dea drumul’ la cumpărături, să ai cu ce, dar şi ce să cumperi.

După decenii de dezumanizare – brutală mai întâi, apoi mai rafinată, cu destule ‘părţi bune’ de sub spoiala cărora mulţi nu îşi mai pot aminti nonsensurile şi relele – în ‘paradisul comunist’, puhoaiele de neterminaţi oameni noi nu mai aveau decât aspiraţii de sorginte materială.

Libertatea nu putea fi concepută ca însemnând a fi liber, ci a avea. A deţine, a cumpăra, a folosi sau adesea doar a etala bunuri de tot soiul era expresia supremei libertăţi.

Dacă şi eu, la nici zece ani, eram contaminat – visând să am jucării ca în Germania :-) – ce alte aşteptări puteau să aibă cei abrutizaţi de lipsa de perspectivă, cu mintea trecută fără de încetare prin râşniţa sloganurilor ideologice?

Puţini spre niciunii or mai fi fost aceia care să creadă în posibilitatea de îndeplinire a falselor promisiuni de înfăptuire a paradisului comunist.

Utopia îşi arătase hidoasa neputinţă de multă vreme. Mai degrabă ar fi făcut plopul pere şi răchita micşunele decât să iasă ceva bun din fantasmagoria comunistă. Probabil că şi cei mai fanatici comunişti (de or mai fi fost vreunii?!) înţelegeau aceasta.

Totuşi, evidenţa eşecului nu era suficientă pentru a aduce eliberarea de credinţa că raiul pe pământ se poate înfăptui. Ba chiar că acesta ar şi exista deja, dincolo de Cortina de Fier.

Comunismul murea, dar efectul său otrăvitor abia avea să se desăvârşească. Majoritatea oamenilor erau robiţi de aceeaşi iluzie pe care o constata Sf. Apostol Pavel: “Dacă morţii nu înviază, să bem şi să mâncăm, căci mâine vom muri!”.

Robii lui ‘aici şi acum’ nu se puteau elibera de comunism decât spre a preschimba lanţurile sclaviei anterioare cu altele mai sclipitoare şi – doar aparent! – mai uşor de purtat.

Din lacul cu rumeguş ideologic al comunismului s-a sărit în puţul consumismului, într-o mocirlă călduţă. Ca de carton putred, sloganurile comuniste erau tot mai greu de ros, dar şi mai greu de digerat. Le-au înlocuit cele de marketing, parcă mai crocante şi apetisante.

Sufletelor constipate de o cvasiabsolută lipsă a opţiunilor, 22 de ani de ‘libertate’ le-au adus o permanentă cufureală, ca urmare a chiolhanului de alegeri care le sunt puse înainte.

Cine nu cumpără nu este şi n-ar putea fi fericit, sugerează – chiar dacă nu explicit – lozincile vremurilor noastre. Cine nu consumă, nu contează (pentru progresul economiei). Cine nu are, nu este (nimic pe lumea aceasta). Acestea sunt proclamatele noi adevăruri.

Şi nici nu s-ar putea numi post-revoluţionare, căci mereu se anunţă noi revoluţii în comerţ, în tehnologie sau economie, başca în politică.

Aşa cum troţkiştii vorbesc despre o revoluţie permanentă, şi în paradisul consumist se tot succed revoluţii – ale preţurilor, ofertelor, bonusurilor, chilipirurilor… Nimic nu stagnează, totul se schimbă. Oare în mai bine?!

Culmea este când negustori din ţara Revoluţiei Culturale a lui Mao Zedong, vin să ne promită o revoluţie a comerţului (potrivit imaginilor de faţă).

Aşa fraieri să fi fost?! La peste două decenii de ‘libertate’, pare-se că n-am învăţat cât de fericiţi putem fi cheltuind mai puţin, dar cumpărând mai mult. Nici nu vrem mai mult de atât, nici că ni se oferă altceva.

Ca ţară creştin-ortodoxă (oare?!) s-ar fi cuvenit să căutăm mai mult nepreţuitele – pace, bucurie, iubire, blândeţe, compasiune, răbdare…

Bine ne-ar fi fost să nu ne fi scobit de miez sufletele, pentru a le umple cu biete consumabile, prin care îşi închipuie rostul sute de milioane de oameni din lumea aşa-zis dezvoltată sau în care îşi caută eliberarea miliardele de chinezi şi de indieni.

Din păcate, şi românii se leagănă letargic pe pânza de păianjen a amăgirii că suntem ceea ce avem şi avem ceea ce putem cumpăra – iar aceasta ar fi o condiţie absolut necesară a fericirii.

UK’s motor vanity fair (24) [Bâlciul deşertăciunilor cu motor din UK]

Although I dedicated another episode to this legendary British car, I feel that there’s a little more to say before exhausting (or maybe not?!) the topic.

In tune with the season, these images (taken by my reader C.L.) are meant to illustrate the good news of 2011 for England’s motor industry.

The Chinese owners of MG have kept their word, and seem more determined to succeed than the previous German owners (BMW).

Not only that they reopened a former MG plant in Birmingham, yet the result of their work could be seen on British roads as of April 2011.

The (re-named) ‘Modern Gentleman’ is back. A new model (MG6 1.8T Fastback) was launched in spring, for a starting price of £ 15,495.

Obviously, many could argue that this ‘renaissance’ of the motor industry in Britain is rather symbolic, having a negligeable impact (what’s more fragile than ‘air bridges’? :-) on the whole of UK’s economy.

Over 75% of the ‘new MG’ is build in Shanghai, shipped to Britain, and finished by less than 100 skilled British specialists.

Anyway, irrespective of the adverse global economic climate, why wouldn’t we hail any little success, in this world so flooded with bad news about the automotive industry?

It took 16 years for the brand’s fans (some of their car clubs: here, here and here) to see a new MG and their patience was rewarded.

There are less than 10 years since no new ARO left the assembly plant in the Romanian municipality of Câmpulung-Muscel, Argeş county (AG).

MG has always been an elitistic brand, such as it’s birthplace (Oxford) is. Still, we are witnessing its resurrection.

Would it be so exaggerate to dream that ARO – a ‘SUV for the masses’, exported to over 110 countries – could be reborn thanks to its current British owner of Romanian descent?

Când locomotivele stabileau ‘standarde’ de viteză... [When locomotives set speed ‘standards’…]

…parcă lumea nu era atât de grăbită, călătoriile erau mai bine pregătite, destinaţiile – mai îndelung aşteptate, gările – mai elegante, vremurile – mai domoale, iar oamenii – mai blânzi şi mai înţelegători unii cu alţii.

Nu era rival al trenului pe pământ (sau pe cer), nici nu existau atâtea jucărele electronice (gadgets) cu care oamenii să-şi care pseudoviaţa de pe Facebook până şi în tren.

Călătoria pe liniile de fier era prilej de socializare autentică. Şi aş zice că încă mai este, în comparaţie chiar şi cu avioanele – care, inclusiv la business class, sunt suficient de incomode pentru a stingheri conversaţiile.

Nu gonea trenul ca gândul, dar măcar îţi dădea prilej de aşezare a gândurilor – care nu mai erau păstrate în împrăştiere, cu ‘ajutorul’ tehnologiei informaţiei.

Călătoria era un răgaz, fie de a sta doar cu tine privind pe geam (aveai ce vedea, că nu erau trenuri-glonţ), fie de interacţiune cu alţii – poate plăcută, poate forţată de vreun pasager agasant de vorbăreţ.

Astăzi, nu doar că totul se desfăşoară mult mai repede, dar nici măcar în interiorul acestei repeziciuni nu mai găseşti clipe doar pentru sufletul tău.

Tot timpul, omul vremurilor noastre este cu ochii într-un ecran (foto), cu căşti în urechi şi cu degetele încleştate până la durere şi deformare pe butoanele unui joc video sau pe minuscule tastaturi.

Într-o astfel de lume, oricâte puteri virtuale ţi-ar da sloganurile ideologice sau publicitare din jur, nu controlezi nicidecum lumea; nu ea este a ta, ci tu al ei.

În acest paradis al nebunilor se trăieşte (sau către el se tinde) în lumea aşa-zis civilizată, unde se oamenii nu doar că mânâncă, ci şi gândesc, visează ori se joacă prefabricat. Puţini mai facem ceva liber; mai toţi răspundem la o ofertă.

Nu există niciun control asupra realităţii reale – pe care doar Dumnezeu îl poate avea, oricât se amăgesc unii că pot stăpâni lumea – dar nici al realităţilor fictive.

Visăm şi ne jucăm cu ce prefabricate (sau pre-rumegate) ni se oferă – în schimbul banilor sau a altor jertfe aduse de noi idolului ‘economie’. Avem o tot mai mică reală libertate, cu cât avem mai multe alegeri.

O frântură de iluzie că mai poţi construi o lume de vis care să îţi rămână doar a ta o mai au pasionaţii de trenuleţe – de la nepoţi la străbunici.

Este tot o deturnare a omului dinspre cele către care ar trebui să tindă, dar parcă – aş zice eu şi cred că şi cititorul meu Mihai Gociu (care mi-a oferit pozele 2, 4, 7) – dar cumva mai benignă.

O graniţă între un sănătos hobby şi o dăunătoare patimă trebuie să existe şi orice pasionat poate risca să treacă dincolo de ceea ce îi este de folos, după cum arăta Sf. Apostol Pavel.

Totuşi, aş zice că într-o lume atât de înnebunitoare precum cea în care trăim, un hobby poate avea un important rol profilactic. Dar puţini sunt cei care au răbdarea unui hobby, care este altceva mult decât prea căutata şi lipsita de sens distracţie...

Mulţi ar zice că sunt bani aruncaţi. În magazinele din UK – poate or fi mai ieftine în talciocuri (flea markets) – preţurile dădeau dureri de cap.

N-am văzut locomotivă mai ieftină de £ 80, vagoanele erau vreo £ 15-20 şi o singură cabină telefonică tipic britanică făcea £ 4. Două cutii poştale, iarăşi tipic britanice, făceau £ 2.75, iar casele (cam vile, nu căsuţe) erau cam £ 16-25.

Două containere cu deşeuri le luai la £ 5.50 – cam cât era (£ 5.52) salariul minim pe oră la vremea când am ajuns eu în UK.

Pe de altă parte, a construi o lume virtuală a trenuleţelor îţi exersează răbdarea, atenţia şi perseverenţa şi îţi mai îngăduie să visezi. Şi să-ţi pui mintea la contribuţie. În afara motoarelor de locomotivă (engines) şi a şineleor (tracks) cam orice altceva se poate construi de către pasionaţi, din resturi provenite de la te-miri-ce.

Nici eu n-aş da nici cel-mai-ultra-nu-ştiu-cum joc video sau gadget pe astfel de jucării pe care să le poţi atinge şi îmbunătăţi. Îţi construieşti lumea aceasta virtuală cum vrei, unde orice dezastru feroviar este reversibil.

Pe când, într-un joc video – să-i recunoaştem meritul de a fi mai interactiv decât holbatul la televizor – cine poate schimba scenariul?

Cine poate schimba regulile jocului la jucăriile electronice ale zilelor noastre? Nimeni, căci orice preferinţe nu pot fi exprimate decât optând pentru lucruri presetate de creatori. Pe când, rolul creator în construcţia dioramelor nu îţi este ştirbit.

Poate este o iluzie, dar îmi vine a crede că pasionaţii de trenuleţe (nu cunosc personal niciunul) sunt oameni (ceva mai) buni şi ştiu exact ce cadouri vor de Crăciun :-)

Hollow triumphalism [Triumfalism găunos]

In the wake of the last EU summit, all leaders who had entered lengthy negociations in Brussels claimed ‘victory’, whilst not truly achieving anything substantial for the half a billion European citizens.

On the one hand, the presumed Franco-German diktat of a European Fiscal Union stepped closer to reality than ever before.

By March 2012, another EU Treaty with as strong historical implications as those of the Treaty of Maastricht is due to be signed.

Out of the EU’s current 27 members (soon to be 28), at least 23 countries will no longer decide exclusively by themselves how to shape their national budgets. A Big – and pressumably wiser – Brother in Brussels (the European Commission) would ‘help’ national governments plan their spending more carefully.

That should be cheered as a ‘triumph’ of common sense and seen as a ‘safeguard’ that public debt would stop accumulating to unsustainable levels in EU countries, we were told.

Nevertheless, this assumption regarding the smooth functioning of the future United States of Europe (USE) does absolutely nothing to solve the actual economic crisis in Europe, and the future of the common currency is still uncertain.

Irrespective of the ideological debate – is it worth giving up national sovereignty or not, could Europeans live better within the USE than in their national states? – a full fiscal union offers no solutions to the current debt crisis…

Neither to the lack of competitivity of many European economic sectors or to the demographic and moral decline of the Old Continent.

When and who is ever going to address those issues in the EU? For how long would political leaders be fooled by fictions such as ‘economic growth’ and ‘prosperity’, which are impossible to achieve while built up on other fictions such as ‘credit’ and ‘capital markets’?

When will history makers (politicians) learn the bitter lessons of history that all times of severe crisis are the broader consequence of a grave moral ills rather than effects of mere disfunctionalities or redeemable mistakes?

There cannot be growth on a continent where millions of EU nationals are are still ‘second (or even fourth!) class citizens’ on the job market, where the brain drain to the USA has never ceased, where hedonism, promiscuity, moral relativism and abortions are widespread.

On the other hand, Britain’s PM David Cameron also claimed his petty ‘victory’ for managing to snatch his country out of the future new European treaty.

Far be it from me to join those deploring Great Britain’s self-condemnation to many years (the most commmonly invoked figure is 20) of isolation. After all, outside the European Exchange Mechanism and the Eurozone, Britain had done better than it would have probably done inside.

Anyway, the much esteemed financial services and the partly nationalised British banking system will not remain immune to what’s going on in the Eurozone, and their freedom of maneuver could be limited whether the UK is in or out a new EU treaty.

Cameron put himself in a ridiculous position, as defender of the bankers (and not for the first time!) in an era when everyone hates them, although most EU Council solutions to the crisis favoured this clique, not the European taxpayers.

In spite of being portrayed as an isolationist (in Europe) or foolish (at home), he dared taking a huge gamble, and that’s somewhat admirable.

Especially when compared to yesmen like Romania’s President Traian Băsescu, who has been a brainwashed lobbyist for the USE even long before this last EU summit.

Last, the little victories of the Hungarian, Swedish and Czech delegations who said they would first consult national parliaments are also ridiculous. It’s not impossible but very unlikely that they would join Britain on the isolationist path.

Britain and Sweden could possibly afford it, like Switzerland and Norway. But Hungary and the Czech Republic would eventually give in to unbearable pressures.

All the triumphalism of those pretending to avoid a catastrophy either by wowing for deeper European integration or, on the contrary, by staying out of too much integration – is equally meaningless.

Europe is in desperate need of both sound economic solutions and of reshaped moral foundations, which it gravely lacks.

Their absence is by no means a sign that the Old Continent requires a ‘revolution’ in political terms or a sort of ‘Nuremberg trial’ for a failed generation of bankers and/or politicians.

It would actually need other Europeans – people aspiring towards what truly matters in this life (which is but an antechamber of afterlife), not hordes of hedonist copycats, enslaved by the dreadful illusion that happiness equals a perpetual ‘I-do-what-I-please (having fun, feeling good) here and now’...

Simply replacing a wrong ideological model (unrestricted free flow of capital, living on credit) with another (a centralisation of austerity) leaves little room for hope. Everything will keep turning from bad to worse.

‘Oamenii de rând’ în arta urbană britanică [The ‘commoners’ in British urban art]

Într-o ţară mândră trecutul glorios precum Marea Britanie, te-ai aştepta să întâlneşti prin oraşe numai statui cu personaje măreţe.

Adică oameni care au rămas în istorie, de la eroi medievali (exemplu foto deja postat de mine) până la generali din cel de-al Doilea Război Mondial (foto).

Desigur, există nenumărate astfel de statui, să le zicem clasice, cu oameni de stat (foto) şi războinici în posturi victorioase sau încrâncenaţi în luptă.

În alte cazuri, ostaşii sunt surprinşi deloc ‘tipic statuesc’, ci, pur şi simplu, în clipele de răgaz ale războiului de poziţii din 1914-1918 sau răpuşi (foto).

Dar este ceva care mi-a părut neobişnuit, ca vizitaror venind din jumătatea estică a UE, pentru că n-aş zice că obiceiul este lipsit de echivalent în jumătatea vestică a Uniunii.

Anume numărul destul de mare (în comparaţie cu ce puţine fotografii am pentru a-mi proba observaţia) de statui cu ‘oameni de rând’ (commoners).

Sunt convins că trebuie să fie un curent (trend) mai recent, poate nu mai vechi de 15-20 de ani, dar ale cărui efecte se cunosc deja în peisajul urban britanic.

Şi nu mă refer doar la muzee, precum Migration Museum din Liverpool, unde este firesc să apară grupuri statuare cu imigranţi istoviţi (poza 4).

Muritori de rând pregătiţi şi cu feţe parcă emoţionate de iminenta călătorie apar şi în faţa micuţei, dar elegantei gări Liverpool Street Station din Londra (poza 1).

În Autogara Buchanan din Glasgow ochii trecătorilor nu pot omite o imortalizată îmbrăţişare – şi ea destul de clasică, specifică unor vremuri mai romantice decât zilele noastre (foto).

În Birmingham, dai peste statui cu un aer mai cunoscut pe meleaguri româneşti (poate şi la Roma), oarecum... proletcultist.

Avem un muncitor (?! – nu-s sigur – poza 2), un marinar (poza 6), un soldat (poza 5), ba poate chiar o muză revoluţionară (?! – iarăşi nu-s sigur – poza 3).

În Edinburgh, până şi potăile de rând (însă devenite simboluri ale oraşului) ca Greyfriars Bobby se bucură de statui chiar şi într-un hol de hotel de patru stele (poza 7).

Cu mulţumiri cititorului meu Mihai Gociu pentru imaginile 2-6, aştept şi părerile altora despre arta urbană din UK.

Will the Eurozone crack? [Va crăpa Eurozona?]

More than three years after the Wall Street Crash of 2008, the unthinkable demise of the euro and the break-up of the Eurozone has (apparently) become plausible.

It’s getting crystal clear even to the most fanatic euroenthusiasts that any imminent economic cataclysm cannot be blamed on convenient scapegoats anymore.

The lazy Greeks, the irresponsible governments in Eurozone weak links countries (PIIGS), along with greedy bankers everywhere may have played relatively secondary roles in influencing the destiny of the EMU.

Nevertheless, the fate of the European currency has never been – nor is it in these very days of turmoil – in the hands of less important actors like the above.

The devil lies in the details of EU treaties and especially in the chain of misdeeds committed by the political leaders of Europe, whether acting unilaterally, from Berlin, Paris or Rome, or together, from Brussels.

Hardly could the roots of the current crisis be located in Frankfurt, as the ECB has seldom had its hands united by the heads of state and government reunited in the Council of the Union.

More and more independent economists show that the mess engulfing the EU and threatening to blow up the global economy has systemic causes.

The EMU is on the brink of disaster because it lacks several fundamental premises of an efficient monetary union; it is made up of an econimic ‘giant’ (Germany) with 16 ‘feet of clay’ of various strengths from stronger (France) and weaker (Italy) muscles to negligible appendices (Estonia).

The ECB could be reasonably functioning as a central bank (if allowed to act do so), yet there is no effective equivalent of a national Treasury (Ministry of Finances) or Government in Brussels.

For decades, EU leaders have been deploring the lack of a common defence policy (greatly compensated by NATO) or of a common energy policy (whose absence contributes to the fact that Europeans are often ‘energy hostages’ of Russia).

It was fashionable to complain about these issues, however, none was as divisive and able to threaten the survival of the EU as the other skeleton that the current crisis took out of the Union’s closet – there is no common fiscal policy of the EMU.

In its absence, sooner or later, the Eurozone would be doomed to crack, like some analysts anticipated in the late 1990s, if not even longer before, around the dawn of this project.

The flaws of the EMU were known from the very beginning but swept under a carpet of great expectations about increased common prosperity.

For a while, the illusion worked. After the first months of wariness, when many Europeans in euro countries were shocked by price hikes, almost everyone grew accustomed with a stable currency, no need for exchange rates, low inflation and bearable interest rates.

The Greeks, Spaniards, Portuguese and others had access to cheap credit, while their tourist industries cashed in strong euros, instead of weak drachmas, pesetas or escudos.

In the meantime, the euro was weaker than how the Deutsche Mark would have probably been in the 2000s, enabling Germany to be biggest world exporter in 2007, ahead of China.

The success story seemed complete, and many warnings (like the ones about Italy being unfit for EMU membership (+ here, here, here) – see the pics*** illustrating this article!) were bluntly dismissed as nonsensical soothsaying.

Actually, there’s growing evidence that it was well-known to the architects of the euro that the Eurosystem was ill conceived from the start.

This didn’t prevent them from taking a huge gamble on the hope that a severe crisis (like the one the world has endured since 2008) would eventually help establish a “a more perfect union,” like the Constitution of the USA aimed in 1787.

Is this imperfect monetary union perfectible? Are the 17 euro countries willing to take upon themselves the full political cost of making the EMU truly functional?

And could giving up more of one country’s sovereignty guarantee anything for the EU’s citizens (“we the people,” if we were to quote the US Constitution again), apart from helping save the banking system from collapse?

Will a ‘full fiscal union’ work better than the current ailing EMU? The Eurosystem would probably run smoothly, yet the imbalances between the 17 economies would remain as grave as they are today, if not even worsen.

Smothering public deficits from the cradle would not grant choices of more responsible political leaders to European voters; it would merely ignite more vicious political battles and maybe even ‘class conflict’ within nations.

And, riskier than anything else, wouldn’t this ‘EU Treasury’ remain as unaccountable to European citizens as other EU institutions and leaders that created the current ‘euro-mess’ have always been?

Din raidurile mele prin inima Scoţiei (24) [From my forays into Scotland's heartland]

Pentru că se apropie prăznuirea Sfântului Andrei – o zi (oare şi miezul ei creştin?!) la mare cinste, atât în Scoţia, cât şi în România – postez câteva imagini din orăşelul scoţian cu numele sfântului.

Acest St Andrews este de-abia al cincilea oraş ca mărime din Fife (circa 16,700 locuitori) şi rămâne în istorie drept capitală a Bisericii din Scoţia (cea dinainte de Church of Scotland).

Deşi de 2.5 ori mai puţin populat decât echivalentul eclesiatic din Anglia (Canterbury), cu greu s-ar putea zice că orăşelul n-ar avea greutate în UK.

Nu atât din perspectivă economică, cât mai ales ca importanţă istorică şi intelectuală, pentru că găzduieşte a treia universitate de pe tărâm britanic, după cele Oxford şi Cambridge.

A treia în ordine cronologică şi încă în top zece universităţi britanice în privinţa calităţii educaţiei, University of St Andrews a fost fondată la 1410-1413.

Mii de studenţi din toată lumea au venit şi vin aici, foarte probabil atraşi nu doar de vreo poveste de iubire princiară precum cea dintre William şi Kate.

Ci de aerul boem dintr-un oraş medieval, fără industrie (în afara celei turistice, inclusiv celei dedicate golfului), unde n-ai ce face decât să studiezi şi să te distrezi.

Cu atât mai puţin nu cred că mai interesează pe cineva moştenirea creştină a localităţii, unde mai funcţionează ‘biserici’, dar nu ştiu câtă ‘credinţă’ o mai fi.

Şi unde ruinele Catedralei din St Andrews – înălţate (începând cu anul 1158) după ruperea creştinătăţii britanice de Biserica Una a lui Hristos – vin ca un avetisment.

De s-o încrede cineva doar în ştiinţa lui, să nu uite ce zice Mântuitorul: “Cel ce rămâne întru Mine şi Eu în el, acela aduce roadă multă, căci fără Mine nu puteţi face nimic”.
